Good morning everyone, I am currently planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island and want to incorporate as much storage space as possible, while also creating a seating area for at least two people. My goal is a functional island that serves as a storage marvel but can also be used as a cozy bar or breakfast spot.

I already have some basic ideas but am wondering how to best take advantage of Metod’s modularity to optimally combine drawers, shelves, and seating areas. I am especially interested in how to properly and structurally attach the seating area to the cabinet carcass and which cabinet types are most suitable for the main storage components.

Perhaps some of you have experience with building such Metod kitchen islands, maybe even in your own homes? Tips on planning, cabinet selection, countertops, and especially on construction details for the seating area would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance.

What also works well is to use tall cabinets on the side for plenty of storage and to utilize the seating surface on a narrower base cabinet in front. Handleless fronts are great for the seating area.

Thanks for the tips so far. I have a more specific question about the seating area:

What is the best way to secure the overhanging countertop when you want to create multiple seating spaces? I imagine that with a length of about 2.4 meters (7 ft 10 in), the countertop needs to overhang enough to comfortably seat 2 to 3 people. At the same time, the construction must be stable and not wobble or warp over time.

Are there reliable, proven solutions within IKEA’s system, or do you need to plan custom reinforcements, such as wooden supports or steel brackets? How have you done this?

The safest method is to attach the countertop directly to the cabinet carcasses and separately to the wall connections using sturdy metal brackets. Additionally, metal or wooden supports can be used if the overhang exceeds 40 cm (16 inches).

IKEA does not offer specific mounting kits for seating countertops, so custom solutions are common. Make sure that no loads are applied to the cabinets that exceed their structural capacity.

Exactly – and remember: It's never a bad idea to overbuild a little. If the seating surface is sturdy and doesn’t creak, sitting there can be really enjoyable. Adding a third support rarely hurts and provides strong stability – it almost turns the island into its own stage in the kitchen space!

Secure the countertop with large-angle brackets, possibly adding a wooden slat substructure. The seating area should be at least 35 cm deep (14 inches).

I think it is important not to underestimate the aspect of material selection here.

IKEA Metod cabinets are sturdy but not designed for heavy static loads. If you plan to create a countertop with large overhangs, choosing a high-quality, durable surface such as plywood or solid wood blocks is advisable. Cheap particleboard tends to warp.

In addition, an extra cross brace under the countertop is recommended. Technical stability and long-term durability are more important than aesthetic appearance.
