Hello everyone,

I am planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island myself and want to include as much storage space as possible. My idea is to combine the standard cabinets in a way that allows for many drawers and compartments without making the island look too bulky. Specifically, I am wondering about the best approach regarding planning, selecting the modules, and ensuring stability. Are there any proven methods or tips on how to make the most of the Metod components to maximize storage?

I am also interested in how to securely fasten the countertop and whether there are any special recommendations for the plinths (kickboards) or interior fittings. I would appreciate your experiences and advice, especially if anyone has already built a similar kitchen island and can share the challenges encountered.

Thanks in advance!

For an ergonomic working height, you can also choose countertops in different thicknesses. IKEA offers 2.8 cm and 3.8 cm (1.1 inches and 1.5 inches) thick panels, which changes the height.

Storage for tall pans works well with deep base cabinets and pull-out drawers.

In particular, I wonder if it’s possible to adjust the legs or use different base units to achieve a comfortable working height.

To add to that: Yes, you can also use base cabinets with taller plinths (toe kicks) or build them yourself. Some people use metal frames or custom-made plinth panels that allow for more flexibility in height.

I’m also interested in how to create storage space for tall pots or pans that often don’t fit in standard drawers.

IKEA also offers some Metod modules with large drawers that are deep enough. Additionally, you can use drawer inserts designed for pots or install pull-out wire baskets in tall cabinets to achieve trolley-like accessibility.

A common mistake I often see is using only standard sizes and not allowing enough space for the height of appliances or cookware. It’s better to measure the tallest items beforehand and then choose suitable modules accordingly.

In addition to the previous discussion, here is an important point: The modules should always be connected using the original IKEA connectors. Alternatively, use very sturdy angle brackets and secure the island against tipping, especially for freestanding units.

Furthermore, I recommend cutting the countertop accurately and to exact measurements before the final installation. Inaccuracies in the countertop often lead to unstable constructions or unsightly gaps.

Finally, careful planning of door swings and drawer extensions is important to prevent them from colliding. For islands with walkways on both sides, ensure that the drawers can be fully opened while still leaving enough space.
