Hello everyone, I am currently planning my new kitchen and want to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island with integrated appliances myself. I plan to place both the sink and cooktop in the island, and also accommodate an oven and a dishwasher underneath. My questions are: What is the best approach for this, and what should I specifically consider when planning and installing the Metod cabinets for appliance integration? Are there any special considerations regarding the connection of the individual modules, especially when water and electrical lines run through the island? What should I keep in mind when installing the connections, and which stability measures are important to ensure everything is safe and durable? I would be very grateful for detailed tips or experiences to avoid common mistakes.

To securely integrate the appliances into the Metod island, first prepare the base structure of the base cabinets to be stable. It is important that all water connections and electrical cables are precisely planned in advance. Use appropriate appliance fronts and pay close attention to the exact dimensions in the Ikea planner. Screw the modules firmly together to ensure stability.

First of all: Very good question, since kitchen islands are always a bit more complex than linear kitchen layouts. When building an Ikea Metod kitchen island with integrated appliances, you should follow these steps:

- Planning: Use the Ikea kitchen planner to determine the exact dimensions of the island and appliances. Pay special attention to the space needed behind the appliances for connections and ventilation.
- Modularity: Metod cabinets are easy to connect, but for islands it is important to additionally stabilize the modules from the inside and underneath – for example, with cross braces or metal brackets.
- Water and electrical connections: Clarify the positions of the connections with a plumber or electrician beforehand. For a kitchen island, lines often have to be routed through the floor or wall to the island area. Plan enough space and access points for maintenance.
- Appliance installation dimensions: Make sure to consider the installation dimensions of the appliances, especially the width and depth. Deep dishwashers or ovens require more space than the cabinets usually provide.
- Assembly: Connect the cabinets with the original Ikea fasteners; for island assembly, additional stabilizing braces are recommended.
- Worktop: Make cutouts for the sink and cooktop. Especially for induction cooktops, the worktop must be heat-resistant and cut precisely to size.

If you have less experience with water connections, always have a professional handle the installation, as stability and safety are very important here.

What exactly are your appliances, and what are their current dimensions?

Absolutely, even if the modules are assembled well, water and electrical connections are not a DIY task for amateurs. It’s wise to include professionals in your planning.

I can completely understand that a kitchen island with built-in appliances is quite a challenge. Especially when connecting Metod modules, I found it important not to rely solely on the supplied fasteners but to also plan additional stability measures. For example, I installed cross braces between the plinths because the countertop with the sink is noticeably heavy.

I also initially had difficulties with the positioning of the connections. My advice: Take the kitchen planning very seriously, measure your space and the utility supplies during the shell construction phase, so that the lines come out exactly where you need them for the island. Among other things, I installed a floor-level water shut-off valve that is easily accessible in case anything happens. This gives me greater peace of mind.

Has anyone ever built the Ikea Metod island with a cooktop extractor? I’m interested to know how the exhaust ducting was managed.

Additional information: For installing appliances in a Metod kitchen island, the following points are essential:

- Structural stability: The island must provide sufficient stability to support the countertop, appliances, and loads. Use more fixing points than in the wall-mounted units.
- Appliances: Pay close attention to the installation depth of Metod cabinets; otherwise, the fronts may not close flush.
- Water/electrical: Electrical connections for the cooktop and dishwasher should be properly protected and installed according to VDE regulations. Plan water lines with accessible shut-off valves.
- Ventilation: Cooktop ventilation usually requires a duct for either exhaust or recirculation. The duct routing in the island can be complex, so allow enough space.
- Countertop: Ensure correct cutouts and compatible materials, especially for integrated sinks and cooktops.

Thorough pre-planning with exact measurements, including appliances, is crucial, as well as coordinating with the electrician and plumber before installation.

Technical check points are often overlooked details that can be costly and time-consuming to fix afterward.
