Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island with an integrated countertop and seating area in my kitchen. Specifically, I’m interested in the best approach to take, which modules from the Ikea Metod series are most suitable for this, and what to pay special attention to during assembly to ensure stability and functionality. It would also be great if someone could offer tips on combining the countertop with seating – for example, regarding the height and durability. I already have basic furniture assembly skills but no specific experience with kitchen islands. Thanks in advance for any helpful advice and experiences!

When planning your Ikea Metod kitchen island, it is essential to start with a clear design and precise measurements. The Metod base cabinets have standardized heights of 80 cm (31.5 inches), including the plinth, and the countertops are usually 3.8 cm to 4 cm (1.5 to 1.6 inches) thick. For seating areas, a raised counter height of about 102 cm (40 inches) in total is recommended, which you can achieve by adding a raised countertop or a separate surface.

You can use various modular base cabinets, such as drawers or cupboard units, to create storage space. Stability is ensured through a solid substructure and preferably screwed connections. It is also advisable to reinforce the countertop with additional crossbars or metal brackets, especially if the countertop overhangs to allow for seating.

Also consider the weight, particularly for larger islands with granite countertops or similar materials. For beginners, a lightweight but sturdy countertop made from assembly-friendly wood-based panels is recommended. Generally, you can follow Ikea’s assembly instructions, but when designing the seating area, it is wise to plan with some flexibility, as Ikea does not offer a complete solution for island counters.

Really exciting project! I had a lot of fun building an Ikea Metod kitchen island myself 🙂 It’s important to plan the seating so there’s enough legroom – at least 60 cm (24 inches) width per seat and about 30 cm (12 inches) clearance under the countertop.

My tip: Choose a countertop that is durable and easy to clean, such as bamboo or a thick laminate option. This makes maintenance much easier and more relaxed.

I also built a bench with cushions instead of using chairs, which feels cozy and saves space. Don’t get discouraged, it’s definitely worth it – good luck!

To address the details involved in building the Ikea Metod kitchen island with a countertop and seating area, I recommend first taking precise room measurements and considering the desired functions. For the base cabinets, you might consider the following combinations:

- Base cabinets with a depth of 60 cm (24 inches) and a height of 80 cm (31.5 inches)
- A toe kick and legs at least 10 cm (4 inches) high for ventilation and easier cleaning

The countertop should be divided into two zones to incorporate both workspace and bar area. For seating, a countertop height of 102 cm (40 inches) is ideal, which is 22 cm (9 inches) higher than the base cabinets.

From a technical perspective, I recommend a sturdy metal substructure, since the standard Metod modules are not designed to permanently support the weight of overhanging countertops. Also, be sure to attach the countertop using special mounting systems that allow some movement to compensate for material stresses.

If you plan to combine seating with stools, consider leaving at least 30 cm (12 inches) of clearance under the countertop and 40–45 cm (16–18 inches) of legroom.

Additionally, avoid attaching the countertop only to the cabinet carcasses. Extra supports or brackets help prevent sagging. In conclusion: although IKEA offers many individual parts, building the island requires a certain amount of self-planning and additional materials for reinforcement.

Thanks for the tip! I’m particularly interested in how exactly to secure this “raised worktop” so that it is safe and stable. Do you need special fasteners for this, or is a standard installation using screws into the Metod base cabinets sufficient?

Additionally, I’ve read that some people combine this kind of countertop area with a lowered panel or recessed sections in the cabinet to make the seating more comfortable. Is something like this possible with Metod, and if so, which modules would be suitable?

For securing the raised countertop, I recommend using metal brackets from a hardware store, which will allow you to firmly attach the countertop to the top edge of the base cabinet. The brackets should be mounted from the inside and screwed to both the cabinet carcass and the countertop to ensure stable support.

For the seating area, a combination of shelves or open units works well as legroom, since the Ikea Metod system does not include specially recessed modules for this purpose by default. However, you can omit a tall cabinet or use an open unit to create seating space.
