Hello everyone, I am planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen island with an integrated seating area and am looking for a detailed guide or tips on the best way to approach this.
Specifically, I am interested in:
- How can I combine the standard Metod base cabinets to create a stable, freestanding island?
- Which countertops work best for the overhang needed for the seating space?
- Are there any special installation instructions when integrating a seating row with bar stools?
- How can I secure the island to the floor without damaging the kitchen?
I already have experience with kitchen assembly, but the kitchen island is new territory for me. I look forward to your practical experience, advice on necessary additions (e.g., kickboards, brackets, extra feet), and any potential pitfalls I should avoid.

To secure the island to the floor, I found it effective to use so-called floor brackets fixed with screws into the tile joints; if you want to avoid damaging the tiles, there are special screws suitable for this.
Alternative: Adjustable furniture feet with rubber bases, which also protect the floor.
Don’t forget to plan a minimum clearance of 90 cm (35 inches) from walls and other furniture for comfortable movement.

It is important that you screw the cabinets together from the inside and do not just snap them in place. Seating areas require more stability.
Cut the countertop so that the seating area has an overhang of at least 30 cm (12 inches).
Install substructures under the seating area to provide stabilization. Stool height about 65 cm (26 inches).

If you want to equip the island with electrical connections, plan cable outlets in the countertop. Thanks, that’s a helpful tip! I was considering integrating a USB charging port and power outlets into the island, but I’m unsure how far I’m allowed to go myself and which regulations I need to follow.
Does anyone have experience with electrical installation for an Ikea Metod kitchen island? Should I hire a professional electrician, or is it possible to do it myself with some caution?
I’ve also been thinking about seating: Are there specific bar stools that work well with the Metod dimension system, or should I stay more flexible?
