Hello everyone,
I’m planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen island with an additional work surface in my kitchen. I mainly want to know how to best combine the Metod base cabinets to create a stable and functional island that also provides enough space for both countertop and storage. It’s important to me to extend the work area so that it seamlessly connects to the island – for example, adding an extra countertop without making it wobbly or compromising the appearance.
I’m also interested in how you handle the installation of the toe kicks and the securing of the individual modules to ensure everything is really stable. Are there any general tips or special tools you would recommend when working with Metod islands? I look forward to your experience reports and detailed instructions or advice on how to do this best.

For the bases: adjust them so that the entire island is stable and perfectly level. Use a spirit level. This prevents wobbly countertops and uneven load distribution. For my Metod kitchen island, I also installed stronger corner braces from the hardware store to increase stability.

Create flexible connections that compensate for temperature and humidity changes. That sounds like an important point I shouldn't overlook. What fastening materials would you recommend here? For example, are special metal brackets with rubber buffers advisable, or is standard hardware like regular angle brackets sufficient?

Also, another question: Should I treat the countertop of the island before screwing it down or only after the assembly? I guess oiling comes after the assembly?
