Hello everyone!
I’m about to start assembling my Ikea Metod kitchen, but I want not only sturdy furniture but also to make it as child-friendly as possible. Since my little ones often play or help out in the kitchen, safety and durability are especially important to me.
I’m interested in hearing which steps and materials you use to build the Metod kitchen units as solidly as possible. Do you have any tips on making the furniture child-safe, such as rounding sharp corners, securing everything properly, and ensuring the units can withstand small carts or rough play?
I’m looking forward to practical experiences, specific product recommendations, or safety measures that have proven effective in daily use. It would also be interesting to know if certain modules or accessories from Ikea work particularly well or can be modified for this purpose.
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I would like to briefly share my experience regarding the technical aspects for a stable installation of the Ikea Metod kitchen, especially with a focus on child safety:
- Always assemble the screws according to the instructions using high-quality cordless drills with adjustable torque settings to avoid overtightening and damage to the cabinetry.
- Reinforce screw connections with appropriate metal brackets or corner braces, especially at joints between cabinets.
- Stainless steel locks and child safety devices (available from Ikea) for cabinet and drawer fronts are easy to install and provide solid protection against unintended opening.
- For the inside of cabinets, child safety devices with clamping mechanisms can be used to minimize the risk of injury.
From my experience, the standard feet of the base cabinets are sufficient as long as the floor is level and the cabinets are screwed together. Unevenness or shaky assembly can otherwise compromise the entire structure. I also recommend securely fixing the toe kicks with mounting foam or construction adhesive.
Regarding edge protection: there are special washable edge profiles made of soft plastic that adapt well to the dimensions of appliance accessories.
If anyone has further detailed questions, I am happy to help.
