emrah67Hello everyone,
I am planning to install several Ikea Metod corner cabinets in my new kitchen and want to maximize storage space. Specifically, I am interested in how to optimally assemble and align corner cabinets and how to use suitable interior fittings to make the most effective use of the space. I am especially having trouble deciding between hinged door and folding door solutions, and I’m also wondering how to best utilize cabinet depths and corners.
What construction techniques and installation materials improve stability and storage capacity? Are there any tips for practical interior fittings that go beyond the standard options?
I would appreciate any suggestions, including experiences from personal projects or advice on potential pitfalls.

Hello emrah67,
your question is very well thought out, and you raise some important points.
Basically, there are two types of Ikea Metod corner cabinets:
- Cabinets with hinged doors (standard option, often with a carousel or LeMans pull-out)
- Cabinets with folding doors (providing more usable storage space, but assembly can be more complex)
To maximize storage capacity, you should focus primarily on the internal configuration. Use fully extendable baskets and adjustable shelves whenever possible. Carousel pull-outs often waste usable corner space, especially if the cabinets are very deep.
For assembly, I recommend aligning the cabinets securely and connecting them precisely. Connecting the cabinet modules at the corner can be tricky, as small offsets may occur, which can later reduce storage space or block doors.
Also, try reinforcing the cabinets internally with additional strips or brackets if your storage is very full. Avoid placing heavy loads on thin cabinet carcasses alone.
If you like, I can also explain in more detail how to fit the base panels and back panels accurately. This also affects stability and indirectly the possible storage space.

Hello emrah67, I just finished planning a kitchen with Metod corner cabinets myself and can only say: Don't hesitate to go for the folding doors! They really helped me access the corners better and use the storage space more efficiently.
The great thing is that the folding doors take up less unnecessary space outward and give you more room inside for large pots and pans, which are often hard to reach in corners.
A small tip: use LED lighting inside, it makes handling things in corners easier and you can see everything quickly. It’s definitely worth it!
Good luck, you can do it!

- First: Planning the cabinet combination
Plan your corner cabinets with a clear idea of the types of items you want to store. Large pots, baking trays, or smaller kitchen appliances all require different interior fittings.
- Second: Cabinet types and door systems
The hinged door option is easier to install, but the usable interior space is reduced. The foldable door solution requires more careful handling but often provides better accessibility in tight front spaces.
- Third: Optimize interior fittings
Pull-out baskets and shelves work very well here. Insertable rotating trays (carousels) take up space but can be useful if you frequently store small items. Sliding drawers with full extension are recommended for better space utilization.
- Fourth: Stability and installation
Be sure to use the included metal brackets in the corners to prevent the corner cabinet from twisting. Pay attention to precise alignment during assembly, especially in the corner area where using a spirit level is essential. Misalignment can limit door function and reduce storage space.
- In summary:
A corner cabinet is a challenge in the kitchen, but with careful planning and quality accessories, you can gain a lot of storage space. It is important not to overload it and to ensure easy daily use.

The great thing about folding doors is that they require less unnecessary space outward, giving you more room inside for large pots and pansInteresting point, but shouldn’t you also consider that folding doors involve a certain complexity in construction and require more maintenance? Especially in frequently used kitchens, hinges can wear out quickly, and when looking at standard corner base cabinets, the carousel with hinged doors is often more durable and at least easier to maintain in the long run.
In my experience, storage capacity is influenced not just by door types but mainly by the depth and height of the individual units. I find it more important to focus on the interior fittings—extendable shelves and storage systems are often more effective than the choice of door style.
Therefore, it’s better not to focus too much on individual features like doors but to consider kitchen use holistically.

I’m still wondering if it’s worth optimizing the cabinets afterward with DIY inserts, for example, specially customized trays or multi-level shelving. Does anyone have experience with self-made solutions that complement Ikea components?
Also: Does anyone have tips for precise alignment in the corner area that I can improve with a spirit level? I’m a bit concerned that small misalignments could quickly disrupt the entire cabinet functionality, especially with pressure points on doors or drawers.
