Lorenz67Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of Ikea Metod cabinets in my kitchen and have two main goals: maximizing storage space and saving as much room as possible. My question is very specific: How can I configure and assemble Metod cabinets to make the best use of the available space, especially by smartly combining narrow and deep sections, using corner storage effectively, and at the same time ensuring the cabinets do not appear too bulky or take up too much space? Which modules and interior fittings are particularly recommended? Also, are there any experiences suggesting whether a variety of inner drawers or special corner solutions provide more extra space? I would also appreciate tips on materials, assembly, and customization. I look forward to your ideas and experience reports!
Hey, great question! 😃 I think the Metod series offers a ton of options to cleverly maximize storage space. For me, corner carousels and the new Magic Corner units are absolute highlights – they make great use of otherwise wasted corner space! Also, combining tall cabinets for pantry storage with wide pull-outs for pots and pans really adds a lot of functionality. And don’t forget: interior drawers and storage inserts often save more space than additional shelves because you can organize everything better. Don’t get discouraged—the installation is definitely worth it!
I understand well how frustrating it can be when you need a lot of storage space but don’t want the kitchen to feel overcrowded. My advice is to plan early, deciding exactly what you use frequently and what you use less often. Then, the Metod cabinets can be combined with different internal solutions for various purposes. My biggest challenges were with the deep cabinets, which I didn’t utilize optimally. Corner storage systems helped a lot there, as well as a mix of drawers of different widths—so you don’t leave too much unused space.
Hello Lorenz67, your question is very well formulated and shows that you are already familiar with the basics. For maximum storage efficiency, I recommend thinking about space in several dimensions: height, depth, and especially the interior layout. With Metod, for example, you can choose cabinets in 40, 60, or 80 cm (16, 24, or 31.5 inches) width – narrow cabinets of 40 cm (16 inches) are particularly easy to integrate into niches and help prevent unused gaps.
An important tip: use internal pull-outs with full-extension slides and inner drawers instead of fixed shelves. These allow you to access items that would otherwise get lost at the back. Corner cabinets with Magic Corner or similar swing-out mechanisms increase storage space by up to 20-30% because they make dead corners usable.
My personal tip: combine tall cabinets with pull-outs at the bottom – there you can store heavy appliances, while wall cabinets with shelves are better suited for lighter and more frequently used items. Also keep in mind that Metod cabinets can be easily retrofitted with lighting, which improves visibility inside and thus creates the impression of more space.
Regarding materials: the standard carcass panels are good, but pay attention to the load capacity of the shelves if you plan to store heavy supplies. Assembly takes some time – make sure to take enough breaks to avoid mistakes and to align everything precisely. Do you have a specific room layout or measurements we should consider?

Exactly! I implemented this in my own home and I’m really happy with how much more fits inside 😄!
Another tip from me: When assembling, make sure to place cabinets as close together as possible to avoid unnecessary gaps. Also, use additional brackets for extra stability — this gives you greater long-term security and ensures the space is truly utilized!
