Hello everyone, I am planning to create the most efficient storage system possible in my kitchen using IKEA Metod cabinets. My goal is to maximize storage space without making the cabinets impractical or overcrowded. I am especially interested in how to best combine the individual modules to optimize tall, wide, and deep cabinets for various kitchen items such as pots, pans, storage jars, and smaller appliances. Which drawer units, shelves, or internal pull-outs make the most sense, and how do you plan the cabinets to truly make the most of the storage space, including considerations for corner solutions or niches? I would appreciate any experiences, tips, and possibly mistakes to avoid, as I am still getting a full grasp of planning with the IKEA Metod modules.

Hello Leo56, your concern matches one of the core strengths of IKEA Metod – the modularity and flexibility in storage solutions. First of all, you should carefully measure the available space, including all niches and possible outlets or water connections. Only then can you later customize the cabinets precisely.

A common mistake is planning cabinets that are too deep. The standard Metod cabinets usually come in 60 cm (24 inches) depth, which already provides plenty of storage space, but for really deep cabinets, I recommend using pull-out shelves so you can easily reach the rear sections.

In general, it is advisable to install pull-outs with adjustable heights in tall cabinets. These can be perfectly adapted to different sizes of pantry jars, cans, or pots. Using panels or reinforced shelves for heavy appliances also increases stability.

Corner solutions can be tricky: pull-outs that work like a carousel (also known as “Magic Corner”) are a very good investment here. This way, you can make use of every centimeter and access even the deepest areas.

Regarding planning, you should also always consider that there are various front and handle options that affect the overall room. When you need a lot of storage, it makes sense to choose a well-thought-out arrangement with different drawer heights – for example, large drawers at the bottom for pots and smaller compartments at the top for spices and cutlery.

I would specifically recommend choosing pull-out drawers instead of shelves for deep cabinets. This makes access much easier. Additionally, stackable boxes inside increase storage capacity and improve organization. Corner cabinets with carousel pull-outs save space and provide better accessibility.

I want to elaborate on that: It’s definitely worth investing a bit more in these carousel or magic corner systems, as they really make a difference, especially in efficient kitchen layouts. Often, corner cabinets are placed in awkward spots where it’s difficult to reach deep inside from the front. With the pull-out mechanism, you can use the entire space directly without stacking or forgetting items.

A further note on cabinet fronts: If you need a lot of storage, the fronts should be sturdy. For heavy use and frequent opening cycles, I recommend handleless designs or durable handles. Mechanical stress should not be underestimated.

I also suggest using IKEA’s interior planner software. The PC-based planning tool knows many dimensions and offers suggestions that you can easily verify. This will save you from having to make adjustments on site later.

Hello Leo56, I really like your approach focusing on maximizing storage space. It is also important to clearly prioritize what you actually use frequently in daily life and what you use less often.

A simple rule of thumb when planning: deep cabinets or drawers are great for large and bulky items like pots, while narrow, taller drawers work well for utensils or storage jars. It’s also worth adjusting shelf heights individually to make the best use of the vertical space.

If possible, you should also consider using internal storage boxes and organizers that fit inside drawers or shelves, as they improve visibility and prevent smaller items from getting lost.

During installation: take your time to carefully go through each step and build system by system, so that in the end you have a modular cabinet that remains flexible.

If you need customized inserts for special kitchen utensils like cutting boards, spices, or lids, these can also be integrated as accessories or DIY solutions.
