Hello everyone, I am currently planning to assemble an IKEA Besta wall unit with integrated LED lighting and am unsure about the best approach, especially regarding the planning and installation of the LEDs.
My questions are: What is the most effective way to install the LED strips without affecting the appearance of the Besta units? Is there a recommended wiring solution that is both neat and safe? And how can I integrate a suitable switch or remote control to operate the lighting?
Additionally, I am interested in which power supply works best with the IKEA LEDs and whether there are specific electrical regulations I need to consider when integrating the LEDs into the furniture.
I have basic DIY skills but want to avoid mistakes that are difficult to fix later. I look forward to your detailed tips and your experience with the Besta wall unit and lighting integration.

To be honest, I think it’s over the top to get so technical about a living room furniture wall. Just install 12V LEDs and call it a day. People who put that much effort into it sometimes forget to enjoy decorating.
It’s simple: just hide them in plain sight as a design element, so you don’t have to worry about complicated cable routing. It works and often looks even better.

I find the advice offered here already very good but would like to add that integrating LEDs in Ikea Besta units requires especially precise preparation:
Step 1: Planning the electrical paths: Depending on the length of the LED strips and the position of the modules, the cables must be properly sized. Cables that are too thin cause voltage drop.
Step 2: Drilling: Pre-drill holes in the right places with a small drill bit to allow clean passage through the back panel. This helps prevent splintering.
Step 3: Dimmability: Powerful controllers are recommended, especially if you want to create different lighting moods.
Step 4: Cable management: Cable ties or clips provide secure fixing to avoid loose connections.
In conclusion: I recommend dry-fitting the modules before final wiring. This way you can adjust everything without repeatedly assembling and disassembling.

For switch users: Hide the switch on the side or inside, depending on how often you need to use the light.

Thanks to everyone for the many helpful tips! The advice on power supplies and cable cross-sections was especially useful.
I will now measure the dimensions of the Besta modules precisely and plan to install the LED strips along the shelves.
I have one more question: Is it better to run the LED strips in a single continuous circuit, or to split them across the individual modules and then route the cables closer to the power supply?
Also, what about heat generation when the LEDs are on? Are there any special precautions to take during installation?
Looking forward to more tips.
