Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an IKEA Besta combination in an L-shape and want to maximize storage space and flexibility. Specifically, I would like to know how to best arrange the modules to mix both open compartments and closed cabinets effectively, while creating a thoughtful solution for changing needs, such as switching between TV equipment, office supplies, or collectibles. Which base modules should I choose, and what adjustments or additions (drawers, doors, legs, Varidesk components, etc.) would you recommend? Also, how can I ensure that the L-shaped combination remains stable and visually appealing? Tips on space planning and clever assembly tricks would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

For planning an L-shaped combination with the IKEA Besta system, the following approach is recommended: - First, measure the room dimensions accurately and design the L-shape with the Besta modules, preferably using the IKEA planner or CAD software. - For maximum flexibility, choose a combination of open shelves and modules with doors or drawers. - Drawers are especially suitable for office or technical accessories, while doors provide a visually calm appearance. - Legs or plinths can be used to allow storage space underneath or to facilitate cable management. - Stability can be ensured by installing wall mounts, especially when using a higher number of modules. - Ideally, include customizable elements such as inner drawers or shelf dividers. - Modules with inner pull-outs or adjustable shelves are very practical for changing requirements. Ultimately, select only modules that fit the intended usage scenarios to avoid unnecessary features.

Important: First, plan what you want to store. If the contents change frequently, use more drawers and adjustable shelves. Secure the modules to the wall to keep the L-shape stable. Use open compartments only if you need regular access to the contents.

Wow, the project sounds exciting! My suggestion: consider using the top surfaces of the Besta units for extra storage or display space. With a few nice boxes or baskets, you can not only add storage but also visually brighten up the room. And remember – a flexible setup benefits from occasional rearrangements, which keep your L-shaped combination looking fresh 😉.

I completely agree. I have already made a rough sketch and noted the measurements. What I am still unsure about: Should I work with the wider 1x2 meter (3x6.5 feet) modules, or use several smaller modules? I find it hard to estimate whether smaller, flexibly combinable elements might later lead to an unstable construction.

That’s a good idea, especially since in my case the two parts of the L-shape don’t directly adjoin but leave a small gap for cable management. The tops are hardly used so far – so it makes sense to integrate them better.

For more flexibility, it’s better to use several smaller modules. You can modify or expand them more easily later on. Stability is achieved through wall mounting and additional metal brackets.
