Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to remodel my Ikea Besta cabinet combination into a modern media wall with integrated LED lighting. My main goal is to create atmospheric indirect lighting installed inside the carcasses, behind the doors, or above the furniture, without the LED strips being directly visible. Clean wiring is important to me, preferably without visible cables, and ideally controlled via remote control or smartphone app.

My questions for the experts here are:
- Which LED light sources (manufacturers, types, color temperatures) work best with the BESTA modules for long-lasting use without producing too much heat?
- How have you managed the wiring when connecting and powering multiple modules?
- Are there special tips for mounting LED strips, especially regarding adhesion and preventing them from peeling off wood or glass over time?
- Do you use specific dimmers or controllers for the LEDs, and how have you discreetly integrated these into the media wall design?

I look forward to tips, instructions based on your experiences, or warnings about what to avoid. Thank you!

I completely understand that having comfortable and unobtrusive lighting is very important to you. I once tried to equip a BESTA wall unit with LEDs myself and know how frustrating it can be when the strips start peeling off or the light is too harsh. It’s important to choose a warm white light (around 2700-3000 K) because it feels cozy rather than cold. For manufacturers, I recommend going for high-quality brands since cheap LED strips tend to lose brightness quickly or produce uneven light. Also, make sure the LEDs are dimmable — that really makes a difference for the atmosphere.

At first, I naively thought about simply running all cables openly, but that looked awful. It’s better to plan the cable routing behind the cabinets and secure everything neatly with cable channels or zip ties. If you power several modules separately, it’s worth using a central power supply that provides enough capacity for all of them and can be hidden in an inconspicuous place.

Good luck with your project! I know it can take more time than you expect, but it’s definitely worth it!

Regarding adhesion: Use only 3M adhesive from high-quality LED strips, especially when attaching to wood or glass. A proven solution that holds reliably.

Dimmer: Buy one with PWM technology, works well also for RGB.

Wiring:
- Plan before installation
- Use cable conduits
- Pay attention to LED polarity.

Hello enistu,

I’d like to share a step-by-step guide on how I equipped my Ikea BESTA wall unit with LED lighting, including the electrical setup:

1. Planning & Selection:
- I chose flexible 12V LED strips with warm white color (3000K).
- Important: The strips need to be dimmable, so I bought a suitable controller with a remote control.

2. Preparation:
- I disassembled the BESTA modules to be able to hide the cables inside.
- I cut the LED strips to length by brand (always at the designated cut points).

3. Adhesion:
- I carefully stuck the strips in place using the supplied self-adhesive backing, reinforcing problematic spots with transparent tape.

4. Wiring:
- Power supply was provided by a centrally hidden power adapter, 12V with sufficient amperage.
- I secured the cables with cable ties on the inner sides of the wooden panels to prevent them from shifting or coming loose.

5. Control:
- For the remote control, I hid a small controller in the upper rear compartment.

Mistakes I made:
- At first, I used cables that were too short, which later caused frustration and required re-routing.

Tips:
- Plan for plenty of cable slack!
- Ensure even lighting and avoid placing strips too close to doors to keep the light from being too conspicuous.

I hope this helps!

In my opinion, the whole LED thing is greatly overrated. Too often, you see those wall units lit up with bright lights, as if they were on a stage. A normal room doesn’t need such artificial lighting. Instead, it’s better to focus on good, classic wall lamps and indirect light sources.

Also: Ikea BESTA is not really designed for this kind of modification by default – anyone seriously interested in working with LEDs should choose a different, more durable furniture series. But that’s just my provocative opinion.

I take a practical approach:
- LED strips with 3M adhesive
- Hide the power supply inside the cabinet at the back
- Neatly route cables using clips or conduits
- Use a dimmer with remote control
Done.
