Hello everyone,

I am planning to build a multifunctional storage cabinet for my office myself and want to use the IKEA BESTÅ system for this. My question is: How can I best configure and optimize the BESTÅ system so that I have space not only for classic storage of file folders and office supplies but also for electronics (such as a printer and router) as well as open shelves for books and decorations?

Are there proven combinations, suitable interior fittings, or clever tips on how to connect and arrange the modules to achieve maximum functionality and storage efficiency?

I am also interested in which adjustments or additions (e.g., doors, drawers, inserts) are especially useful to make the cabinet versatile while maintaining an attractive design.

I look forward to your experiences and ideas!

If you want to hide cables, you can drill your own holes in the back panel or use special cable grommets.

That sounds good. Are drilled holes problematic for the stability? And does anyone know suitable cable grommets for BESTÅ or alternatives that are easy to install?

Holes drilled by yourself in the back panel hardly affect stability, as they only involve thin wood or fiberboard. It is important to work precisely to maintain the panel’s strength.

For cable entries, you can use standardized plastic inserts that fit easily into pre-drilled holes. These are often round, feature a rubber lip to protect the cables, and fit well into BESTÅ.

Alternatively, there are elongated cable guides that can be attached inside the furniture.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I am also considering drawers with inserts for paper clips, pens, etc. Does anyone know of modular internal organizers that fit well with BESTÅ and are not too expensive?

Or do you build something like this yourselves using simple dividers?

There are several proven interior organizers for BESTÅ, such as plastic or wooden inserts for drawers, which can be subdivided multiple times.

If you are budget-conscious, homemade dividers made from thin plywood or MDF panels work very well and can be easily cut to size with a few simple steps.

Tip: Pay attention to the measurements, as BESTÅ drawers come in different widths, so the organization needs to fit precisely.

Understood, I am mainly planning 60cm (24 inches) wide modules but I am not yet sure which depth is the most practical.

Does anyone have recommendations on the depth for BESTÅ drawers for office supplies?

The depth largely depends on the available space, but in offices, 40cm (16 inches) depth is usually sufficient for file folders and typical office supplies.

For TECHNICAL units, a slightly greater depth (around 60cm (24 inches)) is recommended to comfortably accommodate printers and routers, as well as to manage cables.

A combination of both depths can be ideal, so the modules don’t all look the same and can provide space for different functions.
