Hello everyone, I am currently planning to convert an IKEA Besta unit into a bench with additional storage for the children's room. My idea is to use the Besta so that there is a padded seat on top and enough storage space underneath for toys and books. I am uncertain about the best way to reinforce the carcass and fronts, whether an additional sturdy cover is necessary, and how to make the whole construction child-friendly and safe. Does anyone have practical experience or tips on what to consider when assembling and choosing materials? Recommendations for padding or suitable seat cushions would also be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
To go a bit deeper into the topic: Safety in the children’s room is especially important.
- Make sure that all corners and edges of the Besta units are rounded or fitted with edge protectors to prevent children from getting hurt.
- If you plan to move the bench frequently, I recommend installing casters with locking brakes. There are special heavy-duty casters suitable for furniture of this size.
- Connecting multiple Besta units works best with brackets and wooden dowels, which significantly improves stability. This method should be used even when stacking them.
- When choosing upholstery materials, opt for fire-retardant and toxin-tested foams—this is particularly important for children’s rooms. Covers with zippers or Velcro are best so you can wash them.
One more thing: Do you want to use doors or prefer open compartments? Doors keep things looking tidy, but open compartments allow quicker access, which can be practical for toys.

Wow, this idea of using the Besta as a bench is really great for a kids’ room! 😊
I did it myself by taking a thick foam pad and covering it with a durable cotton fabric. Velcro works great for me, and I also added a few screws to the board to keep everything in place.
A little tip: You can brighten up the frame with colorful seat cushions to make it really inviting for the kids! Have fun crafting—it’s definitely worth it!

For me, hook-and-loop tape holds great, and I also added a few screws to the panel, so nothing shifts.Exactly, the combination makes all the difference.
To give one last comprehensive tip: pay attention to edge finishing when cutting your plywood sheet. Sanded edges prevent splinters and ensure safety. A slight rounding with sandpaper is usually sufficient.
If you’re installing doors, I recommend using childproof locks, especially if the storage contains small items that should not be left unattended.
Good luck with building your bench!
