Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install an IKEA Metod kitchen and have decided on an open shelving unit as a design element because I find the airy, modern look very appealing, and at the same time, I want to create storage space for decorative items and frequently used kitchen utensils. My specific question is:

What is the best way to build an IKEA Metod kitchen with an open shelving unit to ensure both the stability of the shelves and a harmonious, functional integration with the rest of the kitchen components?

What should I pay particular attention to when choosing the connecting elements, the assembly sequence, and the selection of shelving parts? Are there any proven practical tips for connecting the open shelves to the wall cabinets or tall cabinets of Metod?

Additionally, I am interested in how to make sure the shelves do not appear too heavy and visually fit well into the room, especially if the kitchen is not very large.

I would be very grateful for any experience, tips, and also example setups!

Hello MARKELSEY,

if you want to integrate an open shelving unit into an IKEA Metod kitchen, careful planning of the installation is essential to ensure both stability and appearance. In general, please note the following:

- The shelving components offered as open shelves in the Metod system are usually designed to fit the standard frame dimensions of Metod. Make sure that the shelf boards match the cabinet sides in size.

- To increase stability, it is advisable to screw the shelves not only to the cabinet carcass but also to the wall, provided the wall can support the load. Metal brackets or special wall anchors are usually helpful for this.

- Installation sequence: first install the base cabinets, then the tall or wall cabinets, as the open shelves are typically attached to these. After that, the shelf boards can be inserted and secured.

- Avoid placing very heavy items on the open shelves to prevent sagging.

- For aesthetic reasons, light-colored shelves or those with a wood finish are recommended to create a light and modern look. In small kitchens, it makes sense to leave shelves open only partially and combine them with cabinets to achieve a balanced visual effect.

I would be interested to know the exact size of your kitchen space and whether you already have specific modules in mind. With open designs in particular, the proportions of the room are important for the overall impression.

Absolutely! In my Metod kitchen, I installed open shelves made of light birch wood — it immediately adds a cozy atmosphere and breaks up the space in a pleasant way. 😊

Regarding your question: Stability is mainly an issue with how open shelves are mounted. I used small metal connectors between the cabinet units to reinforce the whole structure. This makes the entire assembly very sturdy.

If you plan to install glass shelves: they look great but are fragile and require much more robust brackets. Metod offers suitable clips, but I would strongly recommend using high-quality and appropriate mounting hardware.

A small tip: When working with open shelves, adding plants, attractive glassware, and some decoration is a great way to bring life to the space without making it look cluttered.

Simply take the lacquered shelves, screw them to the side panels, and fix them to the wall using brackets. Order of assembly: first the cabinets, then the shelves. Note the maximum load of 10 kg (22 lbs) per shelf.

This statement is correct, but I would like to point out that the positioning of open shelves does matter. If you use the shelves as a connecting element between a tall cabinet and a wall cabinet, the sequence may vary, especially to ensure precise alignment.

Additionally, I think it is important not to underestimate the condition of the wall. Particularly in older buildings with uneven walls, mounting the shelf brackets can be challenging. It is advisable to inspect the wall beforehand and, if necessary, apply leveling measures to prevent the shelves from tilting or rubbing.

Finally, I would raise the question of how frequently the shelves will be used and what the actual load will be. This significantly influences the choice of connectors and fasteners and can affect the durability of the construction.

Hello MARKELSEY,

your question is very well formulated, and I can share some recommendations from my own experience on how to successfully integrate open shelving in an IKEA Metod kitchen:

- Make sure the shelves fit neatly against the cabinets to avoid unsightly gaps. Sometimes you may need to make slight adjustments to the side panels if things don’t line up perfectly.

- IKEA offers specific Metod accessories like shelves and corner connectors that are ideal for these constructions. Use the original parts to ensure a precise fit.

- When attaching the shelves to the wall, check for the presence of wall studs and use appropriate anchors—otherwise, the load-bearing capacity can be risky.

- A good installation sequence is: first assemble the base cabinets, then the wall cabinets, and finally fix the open shelves. The shelves are often mounted directly above the wall cabinets so they appear to "float" while remaining stable.

- Avoid storing too many heavy kitchen utensils on the open shelves, as this can quickly create a cluttered look and disrupt the overall aesthetic.

If you can provide specific dimensions of your kitchen or the planned modules, more targeted advice can be offered.
