Hello everyone, I am planning to build an Ikea Metod kitchen unit soon and would like to combine it with an integrated dining table. The main challenge I see is the practical implementation – specifically, how to best arrange the Metod cabinets to create a seamless transition to the dining table that is both stable and functional.

I am particularly interested in which dimensions I should consider, how to optimally attach the cabinets to the tabletop, and whether there are recommended materials or additional Ikea parts to reinforce the structure. Maybe someone has experience with a similar project and can also offer tips on how to cleverly incorporate storage without limiting the surface area too much.

I look forward to your ideas and recommendations on planning, assembly, and design of this kitchen unit with an integrated dining table.

For the height difference, you can either use a lower table or reduce the tabletop thickness.

Alternatively, trim the kitchen countertop on the table side to be thinner or design it with an overhang for legroom. It is important that the chairs fit under the table.

I had exactly this height conflict! My solution was to use a slightly thinner countertop on the dining table side and then use standard chairs. Additionally, I installed sturdy metal brackets at the end of the table to firmly anchor it to the kitchen unit. It holds extremely well and looks really classy! 😄

Maybe it could be balanced out with a slightly reduced frame or a special tabletop?

Exactly that—just a thinner countertop or a tabletop with a removable support structure.

I think it’s great how structured the approach here is. I’m familiar with the challenge of dealing with height from my own experience, and at the beginning, I also had concerns about whether everything would fit well and be stable.

Don’t worry, a bit of uncertainty is normal, but with proper planning, a project like this can be enjoyable. If possible, you might make the table legs adjustable or include a mechanism for fine-tuning small adjustments, so you stay flexible in case corrections are needed during assembly.

A strong connection is essential. I would recommend using metal brackets or special countertop supports available at hardware stores. You can reinforce the METOD cabinets with panels and secure them with short screws and wall plugs.

Consider using silicone between the cabinets and the countertop as an additional measure for a firm hold, but please do not rely on it as the sole fastening method.

Storage space in Metod can be effectively increased with taller cabinets or additional wall cabinets.

Make sure the dining table area doesn’t become too bulky, so movement isn’t restricted. The overall look is enhanced by using a continuous countertop material and matching cabinet fronts. Don’t underestimate stability – it’s better to have more connection points and legs than too few.
