Hello everyone, I am currently planning to build a kitchen island using the Ikea Metod system and am looking for advice. My main focus is on how to best approach the planning and assembly to ensure everything is stable, functional, and fits well into the room. I already have basic experience with furniture assembly but am uncertain about some details such as connecting the individual modules, aligning the fronts, and how to properly install the countertop so that it doesn’t wobble or get pressure marks. The integration of appliances like the cooktop or sink is also causing me some concern, especially regarding the cutouts and installation. Does anyone have experience with a Metod island and can share tips on what I should pay special attention to? I look forward to helpful suggestions and practical examples.

It is important to measure precisely and set the modules level. The fronts of the Metod system align with the wall cabinets, so start by adjusting those first. Secure the countertop firmly with screws and be sure to use the specialized IKEA connectors, as they ensure stability. For appliance cutouts, it’s best to work in advance with the manufacturer’s dimensions.

Hello Cristiano,

I understand you well—building an island with Metod modules is truly a great step, but there are some important points to consider. Here are a few basic tips:

- Planning: Use the Ikea kitchen planner software, where you can enter the exact dimensions and get an idea of how everything fits together. You can also plan the countertop and cutouts there.

- Stability: Especially with islands, the connection between the individual base units is crucial. While the Metod connectors are sturdy, I recommend adding a stabilizing back panel in the center of the island or at least securing the connection at two points.

- Countertop: If you have a countertop thickness of about 2.8 cm (1 inch), which is the standard at Ikea, make sure to fasten the countertop correctly using the clip elements and the supplied screws. This helps prevent wobbling.

- Appliance Integration: If you are installing a sink or cooktop, be sure to follow the cutout template provided in the manufacturer’s manual. You will need tools for precise cutouts—a jigsaw with a fine blade is usually ideal.

- Alignment of Fronts: Especially with islands that have multiple cabinets, you need to work very precisely to avoid gaps that are too wide. It’s best to hold the fronts in place after assembling the boxes but before fastening them, using spacers.

I hope this gives you a good foundation. If you have any questions, I’m happy to help in more detail.

That’s a good approach, but I’d like to add that you should carefully check the countertop before installing the cabinet fronts to ensure it is fully level and free of stress. Islands especially tend to develop “twists” due to uneven cabinet heights. I recommend the following steps:

- Place all cabinet boxes exactly level side by side and tightly connect them using Metod connectors.
- Adjust the adjustable feet to the same height—best checked with a spirit level.
- Initially place the countertop loosely on top, without screws, to see if it fits precisely.
- Seal all cutouts for the cooktop, sink, and others on the underside of the countertop (with silicone or a special sealer) to prevent water damage.

Also important: If your island doesn’t have a back panel or wall to rest against, the countertop should be securely anchored to the wall or floor. Ikea offers special metal brackets that can be mounted on the back side to provide additional support.

If you want more information about tools or the cutouts, just ask! And how exactly do you plan to integrate the appliances?

I really like that you’re approaching the project with such care. An island is not only an aesthetic upgrade but also a space-saving solution and the centerpiece of the kitchen. What I’ve learned is that patience is key. Especially when you’re doing the screwing and sawing yourself, small inaccuracies can be frustrating. It’s important to take breaks from time to time and to exchange ideas with someone else.

Do you already have an idea of how much time you plan to allocate for the assembly? I personally spread the island build over two days: on the first day, I assemble all the boxes and check the connections, and on the second day, I focus on the countertop and final assembly. If you ever need a tip for screws or connectors, just let me know—I used heavy-duty brackets combined with screws, which adds extra stability.

And don’t forget about lighting! Many underestimate how important good LED strips under the countertop or inside the island are to create the right atmosphere later on.
