Hello everyone, I’d like to start with a question about the best way to convert the Ikea Besta shelving system into a bench with integrated storage. I imagine the bench should be stable enough to sit on comfortably, while also providing enough storage space to keep various items organized. I’m particularly interested in how to best modify the individual Besta components, which materials or additional parts would be useful, and if there are any technical tips to keep in mind during assembly to ensure stability and functionality. It would also be helpful to know how to finish the surface so that it is comfortable and visually appealing. If anyone has personal experience or suggestions regarding possible dimensions, types of padding, or joining techniques, I would be very grateful. Thanks in advance for your tips and advice!

Hello NAMIRNI, your question is really well thought out and provides a lot of context, which makes it easier to offer help. For a sturdy conversion of Ikea Besta into a bench with storage, it is important to first consider the basic structure.

- The Besta modular units are generally designed for light to medium loads, so I recommend reinforcing them with additional angle brackets, especially if the seat surface will bear weight.

- For the seat surface, you can have a stable MDF board cut to the appropriate size to place on top of the units and screw it in. Padding, for example with foam covered in a durable upholstery fabric, will provide comfort.

- Screws should ideally be placed into existing reinforcements; if necessary, additional metal brackets can be added from the inside for better stability.

- The storage function is preserved if you keep the doors or flaps operational, or alternatively, you can make cushions that are easy to remove.

- You can treat the surfaces with paint or laminate to protect against scratches or to customize the appearance.

If you like, I can also recommend specific dimensions and types of upholstery fabric in detail. I hope this helps you so far!

That is the best advice. Add foam padding and a durable cover, and it will hold up well and look good.

For reference:

The load-bearing capacity of a bench built on a Besta base primarily depends on the connection between the cabinets and the seat surface. Since Besta modules are not originally designed to carry seating loads, I recommend the following:

- Use seat boards made of MDF or plywood at least 15 mm (½ inch) thick.
- These should be fixed perpendicular to the cabinet height with metal brackets attached to the Besta side panels.
- Additionally, a crossbeam or frame system under the seat surface is advisable to prevent sagging.
- High-tensile screws (e.g., chipboard screws 4 x 50 mm) should be used to secure the connection.
- For cushioning, foam with a minimum thickness of 3-4 cm (1¼–1½ inches) is recommended to ensure seating comfort.

The original Besta material is 18 mm (¾ inch) thick, which is sufficient for the cabinets but replacement boards of controlled quality should be chosen for the seat. A final covering, such as an oil- or water-resistant fabric, increases the durability of the upholstery. Also, the construction should ensure adequate overall height and depth to achieve an ergonomic seating position.

These recommendations are based on material data and proven modifications of Besta furniture for seating solutions.
