Hello everyone, I am planning to convert the Ikea Besta shelving system into a bench with storage for the children’s room. I am looking for a detailed, practical guide or tips on how to best achieve this. It is especially important to me to know how to connect the modules so that the bench is stable enough to support occasional visits from my kids, while also providing sufficient and easily accessible storage space. Are there any recommendations regarding the right BESTA modules, optimal fastening methods, or suitable seat cushions or custom-made covers? Any advice on child-friendly height and safety would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Are Ikea countertops also suitable to use as seating surfaces? They seem a bit thin at first glance.Hi Gamal40, I built a Besta bench in a similar way last year and can tell you: yes, countertops work great because they are smooth and sturdy! But as mentioned, you should really screw them firmly and support the underside properly—otherwise, it can wobble easily.
For the cushion, it’s best to use foam with a fabric cover—soft enough to be comfortable but still easy to clean. That way it’ll also be cozy for the kids!
And if you want to add a bit of style: stick some colorful stickers or magnetic boards on top—it makes the whole thing more kid-friendly and fun.
I love DIY projects with Ikea! Your idea sounds really great – using the BESTA as a bench with storage, perfect for a kids’ room! 😊
A small tip for the seat cushion: look for foam with a removable cover, so it’s easy to wash if anything spills. And definitely add non-slip rubber feet to the bench to keep it from sliding around during playtime. Safety first!
Cheer up, you’ll surely manage it! Feel free to ask if you need more details 😉
