ᐅ How do I build a dresser with soft-close drawers using IKEA Besta units?

TRABUHello everyone,
I am planning to build a chest of drawers with soft-close drawers myself using the IKEA Besta system, but I need some support regarding the procedure. Specifically, I want to know how to properly install and adjust soft-close drawers so they close smoothly and quietly without sticking or rubbing. The chest should have an internal width of about 60 cm (24 inches) and three drawers, which I want to equip directly with the appropriate soft-close mechanisms.
It is important for me to understand which assembly steps are particularly critical when putting together the drawers with soft-close slides, whether there are any special installation instructions for IKEA Besta that need to be considered, and how to best ensure that the drawers run perfectly and parallel in the end.
If anyone has experience with Besta chests, I would be very grateful for practical tips on selecting the rails, correct installation, and fine adjustment. Advice on the necessary tools or potential pitfalls would also be great. Thank you in advance!

When installing soft-close drawers in the IKEA Besta system, several points can prove to be critical. I would like to describe my approach in detail, including technical aspects:
- First, you should choose the correct soft-close slides that are compatible. IKEA offers different models, for example, Illumination or Metod drawer systems, but for Besta, the Tipp-ON Blum mechanism or Blum’s Metabox slides are usually best if you prioritize quality.
- During assembly, it is crucial that all the drawer side panels are mounted exactly at right angles. Small inaccuracies can later cause binding issues.
- Soft-close slides often have adjustment screws that allow fine tuning of the front alignment (height, lateral). Use these to optimize the track fit.
- Setting the drawer onto the slides should be done carefully to avoid any misalignment. I recommend aligning the drawers separately first and then hooking them in deliberately.
- When testing, close the drawers slowly so the damping system breaks in gently.
- A common pitfall is incorrect screwing of the slides: use short screws to avoid penetrating through the material, and ensure screws are inserted at right angles.
- Regarding tools: a cordless drill with torque control is ideal. Also needed are screwdrivers, a spirit level, and a tape measure.
I’m curious: Which slides have you considered for this project so far, or have you already ordered some? That way, I can assist you more specifically.

A very well-expressed concern.I know the feeling when you want to assemble a Besta dresser with soft-close drawers – I’ve tried that myself and was quite unsure if everything would fit correctly in the end. The important thing is not to stress too much if something doesn’t fit perfectly right away. I made many small mistakes back then, like slight misalignment of the drawers, and had to make adjustments.
My advice is to assemble the drawers once without the front panels temporarily and then check how they slide. This way, you can better identify where the problem is.
And even if it’s annoying: especially with soft-close mechanisms, it’s worth tightening all screws firmly in the correct places, but not overtightening them. Last but not least, a steady hand and plenty of patience have helped me personally. Good luck with the assembly!

how can I best ensure that the drawers run exactly and parallel in the end?To ensure that the drawers run precisely and parallel in an IKEA Besta dresser with soft-close:
- First, check the side panels of the dresser for dimensional accuracy and squareness. Use a spirit level, as slight deformations can occur due to the material.
- Install the soft-close slides according to the instructions, paying close attention to the exact positioning; screw hole markings are often provided.
- Adjust the slides precisely using the adjustment screws to avoid operational issues. The soft-close mechanism is often located above or below the slide, so be especially careful here.
- For the drawers, make sure the drawer bottom and back panel are flush and level. Also, check that the drawer front aligns evenly with the dresser surface to prevent binding.
- A commonly overlooked factor is the drawer’s load weight. For heavily loaded drawers, sturdier slides are necessary.
- Finally, test each drawer multiple times to allow for any fine adjustments.
I also recommend carefully studying the IKEA soft-close drawer slide assembly instructions, as they often contain very precise mounting advice.
