Nugabriele20 Dec 2020 07:43Hello everyone, I am currently planning a small DIY project and want to install a countertop on top of the Ikea Besta shelving unit to create a practical workspace. My main question is: How can I securely mount a stable, functional, and visually appealing countertop on a Besta unit without it slipping or getting damaged? I would also like to know which materials are recommended and if there are any special considerations for fastening, especially if I plan to use a thicker countertop. Are there any tips for preparing the Besta unit and choosing the right height for ergonomic working? I appreciate any advice, as I am relatively new to this kind of furniture modification.
Hello Nugabriele,
to securely mount a countertop on an Ikea BESTA unit, it is important to first measure the dimensions precisely and choose a board that is compatible with the depth and width of the shelving. Ideal materials are solid wood or MDF with a protective coating that resists moisture and scratches. When placing the countertop, make sure it cannot slip. This can be achieved by using either angle brackets screwed from underneath into the countertop or special anti-slip pads between the countertop and the BESTA.
Height is another crucial factor: a standard BESTA unit is usually about 40 cm (16 inches) deep, and the typical countertop working height should be around 85–95 cm (33–37 inches). If the BESTA shelf is lower, you should either add legs beneath the unit or place the furniture on an appropriate substructure.
For preparation, you can apply a thin protective layer to the surface of the BESTA to prevent moisture from penetrating from above. You should also check whether the furniture connections of the BESTA are still tight to ensure a stable base.
One more question for you: What type of workspace do you have in mind? Something for kitchen use, crafting, or a computer workstation? This can influence the choice of material.

I would recommend using a multiplex plywood panel because it is stable and relatively lightweight. Secure it with brackets to prevent any slipping.Multiplex plywood is definitely a good choice. However, I would add that surface treatment is important for multiplex plywood; otherwise, it can swell. Another practical tip: if the panel overhangs, it’s best to protect the panel edges with edge banding to prevent chipping.
For a secure and durable work surface on the BESTA, I recommend:
- Material: 18-20 mm (0.7-0.8 inches) thick wood or MDF with a proper sealant.
- Attachment: Screw flat brackets underneath the board and the shelf to prevent slipping.
- Preparation: Check the shelf’s load capacity and reinforce corners if necessary.
- Ergonomics: Worktop height should be at least 85 cm (33.5 inches); adjust the frame as needed.
Avoid using adhesive tapes for fixing, as they do not hold over time and leave residues. When assembling, ensure the surface is aligned properly to prevent stress.

One more question for you: What type of work surface do you have in mind? Something for kitchen use, crafting, or a computer workspace? That can influence the choice of material. Thanks for asking. The surface will primarily be used for office and crafting activities. Therefore, it should be resistant to scratches and paint, but it doesn’t need to be waterproof like a kitchen countertop. Still, it should be durable and, if possible, easy to clean. I was considering a surface that can be sanded down and repainted. Would plywood (multiplex) still be suitable for this, or are there better alternatives?
