Sanvoltair26 Apr 2023 19:23Hello everyone,
I recently bought an Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and want to protect its surface as best as possible from scratches, moisture, and general wear. Since the wardrobe is mostly made of coated wooden panels, I’m wondering which care methods or protective measures are most effective to preserve its appearance for a long time.
Does anyone have experience with special sealants, protective films, or regular maintenance routines that actually help without affecting the look or functionality? Tips on cleaning products or preventive treatments against signs of wear are also welcome.
Looking forward to your suggestions!

Hello Sanvoltair,
To properly protect the Brimnes wardrobe, you should first understand that the surface is made of melamine-coated chipboard. This layer is quite resistant to light scratches and moisture, but it is not indestructible.
Here is the approach I recommend:
- Clean the furniture regularly with a soft, slightly damp cloth without using harsh chemicals. Microfiber cloths work well for this.
- For additional protection, you can apply a transparent protective film designed specifically for furniture surfaces. These films are available at hardware stores or online and prevent scratches without significantly altering the appearance.
- Alternatively, there are waxes or furniture polishes suitable for plastic surfaces. However, I advise caution here, since not all products adhere well to melamine-coated surfaces and some might cause stains.
- Avoid standing moisture, so do not leave wet glasses or water pooling on the surface.
I am also wondering how the wardrobe is being used: Is it placed in a high-traffic area or more for decorative purposes? This will affect the choice of protective measures.

I am still wondering how the cabinet is going to be used: Is it placed in a high-traffic area, or more for decorative purposes? This affects the choice of protective measures.Good question! The cabinet is located in a bedroom, so it will mainly be used for storing clothes and opened occasionally. There is no direct sunlight, no kitchen or similar nearby, but sometimes slightly damp textiles might be placed inside. Scratches from jewelry or dishes are unlikely, since nothing like that will be stored there.
Are there any specific cleaning or care products recommended for this use case that ideally also help to minimize or conceal minor signs of wear? I am also interested in any warnings about products that should be avoided.

Are there special care products for this type of use that ideally also help to improve or hide minor signs of wear? For your use case in the bedroom, I recommend using gentle furniture care products specifically designed for melamine-coated surfaces.
- Use a specially formulated furniture care fluid that contains no waxes or oils, as these can build up on melamine-coated surfaces and later appear dull.
- There are repair pens or kits for small scratches that are quite color-matched and can effectively conceal light signs of wear, especially for white or light-colored surfaces.
- Never clean the surface with abrasive cleaners or alcohol-based products, as these can damage the melamine film and leave rough areas that attract dirt.
- I consider protective films somewhat excessive for low-use living areas, as they make material differences visible and can cause air bubbles or peeling if applied incorrectly.
In summary: mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents and targeted scratch repair kits are the best options to maintain the appearance.
