LOXENOHello everyone,
I am currently planning the interior fittings of my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and would appreciate some tips on the best approach. Specifically, I want to optimize practical use – meaning sensible layouts, organizing drawers and compartments, and possibly using inserts or organizers to minimize wasted space.
Which planning tools or methods have you found effective? With the wide range of interior options from Ikea, it’s been challenging to keep track. Are there any logical principles or general guidelines to consider, for example for spices, pots, cutlery, pantry items, and so on?
I’m also interested in whether it’s worth investing in specific inserts or if the cabinets can be well organized with simpler solutions. Any insights on personal experiences, challenges during the planning phase, and practical tips would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to your responses!

Which planning tools or approaches have you had good experiences with? This is definitely one of the key points! Personally, I find the Ikea Metod Planner app quite handy – although it’s not perfect, it helps you get a feel for the dimensions and possible modules.
It’s important to carefully consider your exact needs beforehand: What do you want to have within easy reach most of the time? Which items are used less frequently? This helps a lot with organizing the layout. A few tips from me:
- I put pots and pans in pull-out drawers with pot holders, which saves space and avoids annoying stacking.
- Cutlery goes into cutlery trays, preferably with extra compartments for kitchen utensils.
- I keep spices in a small pull-out drawer or on a spice rack attached to the door.
Sometimes it’s also worth investing in flexible inserts that can be rearranged if your needs change.
And don’t be afraid of a bit of trial and error – kitchen planning rarely turns out perfect on the first try! 😊

Which planning tools or approaches have you had good experiences with? Especially with the wide range of IKEA kitchen components, I find it hard to keep track. The topic of interior fittings for IKEA Metod is indeed quite extensive and requires a systematic approach. My suggestion would be to proceed in the following steps:
- First, make a detailed inventory of your cooking utensils and food supplies. What items do you have, and how often do you need to access them?
- Use frequency of use as the main principle for organization: items used daily should be within easy reach.
- Pay attention to the different heights of drawer inserts, for example, shallow inserts for cutlery, taller and more stable ones for pots and pans.
- Take advantage of modularity: IKEA offers pull-out inserts, dividers, and narrow storage bins. A well-thought-out combination helps prevent clutter.
- For spices, a dedicated spice insert or magnetic strips/shelves that can be attached to inner cabinet doors is recommended.
Planning tools like the IKEA Kitchen Planner allow you to visualize the dimensions. It is important to also include the measurements of the interior fittings, since not every insert unit fits into every cabinet frame.
One final tip: document the planned dimensions and insertion depth before ordering. It is difficult to react flexibly in case of wrong purchases.
How large are your Metod cabinets exactly, and do you have mainly wide cabinets or many narrow ones?

What are the exact dimensions of your Metod cabinets, and do you have mostly wide cabinets or many narrow ones? This is very important. For wide cabinets, the interior fittings need to be much more robust because of the weight.
Consider drawers with full extension for greater convenience.
Cutlery inserts from Ikea usually fit well.
You might also want to plan separate pull-outs for glasses and plates.

Are there logical principles or general rules to consider, for example for spices, pots, cutlery, pantry items, etc.?Yes, there are some clear guidelines for efficiently organizing the interior fittings in Metod kitchens:
- Grouping: Arrange similar items together, for example pots and pans in one drawer, spices separately and within easy reach.
- Ergonomics: Frequently used items should be stored at waist height or higher, rarely used items lower down.
- Space utilization: Use adjustable dividers to make sensible use of cabinet space and avoid dead corners.
- Interior fittings matching the cabinet system: Ikea offers custom inserts precisely designed for Metod cabinets. This prevents gaps and wasted space.
- Plan and document in advance, and pay attention to the manufacturer’s specifications regarding dimensions and load capacity during planning.
Thoughtful planning minimizes later adjustments and saves time in daily use.
Which cabinet type do you prefer, for example 60cm (24 inches) wide base cabinets or 40cm (16 inches) wide? This significantly affects the available interior fittings.
