Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of organizing my small room as efficiently as possible using IKEA Hemnes furniture. Specifically, it is a room of about 12 square meters (130 square feet), in which I want to fit a Hemnes wardrobe, a chest of drawers, and a bed. My goal is to create as much storage space as possible without making the room feel cluttered or restricting movement too much. I am especially interested in practical layout tips, smart use of wardrobe compartments, and possibly combinations with other furniture or room dividers to make the most of the space. Do you have experience or proven methods for organizing Hemnes furniture in such small rooms? What tricks help to make the space both functional and cozy?

Thanks in advance for the helpful suggestions. To better clarify: I have a classic Hemnes bed without drawers. I wanted to skip the pull-out bed due to the effort involved and because I want to maintain comfort when lying down. The dresser is a classic model with 3 drawers. The Hemnes wardrobe with 3 doors is placed along the long wall. It is important to me that the room does not appear any smaller. I also have no space for additional wall shelves next to the furniture, as windows and doors significantly reduce the wall space. Using the space under the bed for storage is unfortunately limited since I have already filled that area with boxes. I am particularly interested in any tips on how to organize the existing dresser and wardrobe so that everyday items are quickly accessible but still neatly stored. Ideas for interior divisions in the wardrobe would also be very helpful.

That’s a very precise question, which I appreciate. First of all: In the Hemnes wardrobe, you can use modular shelves and hanging rods to create different levels. Organizer boxes or fabric baskets that fit on the shelves are also practical. For everyday clothing, a height that is easy to see and reach, roughly chest to waist level, works well. Seasonal or infrequently used items can be stored in the lower part of the wardrobe.

With the dresser, it’s helpful to sort the drawers by theme—for example, underwear, everyday clothes, smaller accessories. Using drawer dividers helps avoid rummaging through them.

Have you already tried different sorting methods, or is everything still rather loosely placed in the compartments?

Currently, it’s still somewhat disorganized, which can be stressful in the mornings. I would like to implement a better system, but I’m unsure how to sort everyday items to find them quickly without wasting space. Do you think sorting the drawers by frequency of use makes sense? For instance, keeping everything I use daily at the front and easily accessible?

And regarding your question: No, I haven’t used any dividers or containers yet, which probably adds to the mess.

Absolutely yes! In my experience, it works best to store everyday items at the front and in an organized way. This saves a lot of time in the morning and prevents you from losing the system later on. Additionally, I recommend developing a small routine: put things back in their place after use to keep order consistently. Small boxes or drawer dividers might also help prevent items from shifting around.

The topic of order and organization in small rooms is really fun! 🙂

What I would like to add: try to use as many multifunctional furniture pieces or accessories as possible. For example, place small storage baskets on top of the dresser that can serve as a place for tablets or keys.

Also, a mirror on the inside of a wardrobe door can make better use of space and visually enlarge the room!

Your concern is exactly on point, since the use of interior doors in Hemnes furniture is often underestimated – there is a lot of potential here to hang small items like belts or scarves.
