ᐅ What is the best way to organize cables inside an Ikea BESTA unit?

layliHello everyone,
I recently assembled an Ikea Besta shelving unit and now want to organize the cables inside as neatly and safely as possible. My devices are multimedia components with multiple HDMI, power, and network cables converging. Although the unit offers plenty of storage space, the open compartments and the back panel opening quickly cause cable clutter, which I want to avoid.
My question is: How do you best arrange your cables inside the Ikea Besta to keep them not only neatly organized but also functionally accessible, without creating kinks or damage?
Additionally, I’m interested in which accessories you use—such as cable ducts, hook-and-loop straps / cable ties, or special clips—and whether they work well for you.
Thanks for your tips and experiences!

Hello layli,
First, it is important to prepare the cables by type and length and ideally bundle them before placing them into the BESTA unit. I recommend the following steps:
- Separate cable bundles by function (power, HDMI, network) to minimize interference.
- Use cable ties or Velcro straps that can be easily undone.
- Since the IKEA BESTA does not have built-in cable channels, use self-adhesive cable clips that you can attach to the back panel. This keeps cables securely in place.
- For better protection and organization, you can use flexible cable spirals.
- Make sure to leave enough slack at connection points for plugs and connectors to avoid strain.
These measures will help prevent cable clutter and damage.

Make sure to leave enough slack at connection points for plug connectors to avoid stress. This is an important point, but it raises the question: "How much slack is sufficient?" This is often underestimated, especially with short cables.
It would also be interesting if anyone has experience with replacing or modifying the back panel using alternative materials to simplify cable management.
I generally wonder whether we should move away from the standard solution (cable ties and clips) and consider more modular systems, especially when technology is frequently changed.
Hello everyone,
I would like to add a brief guide on how to optimize cable management in the Ikea BESTA system, complementing the previous answers:
1. Plan before installing: Clearly decide which devices will go where and note their connections. This makes cable routing easier.
2. Secure cables: Use hook-and-loop fasteners instead of single-use nylon cable ties. Hook-and-loop is more convenient for maintenance.
3. Hide cables preferably along the side edges or at the back of the shelves, keeping the view clear while maintaining access.
4. Adjust the back panel: Often, just a few strategically drilled holes or cutouts are enough to guide cables neatly.
5. Cable channels or spiral wrap can be helpful, especially when several thicker cables are bundled together.
6. Common mistake: Tying cables too tightly or mounting them under tension. This can lead to cable damage or connection issues over time.
Summary: Systematic planning and gentle securing are key. If devices are changed frequently, flexible hook-and-loop solutions and easily accessible guides are recommended.
I hope this helps!
