Lemeo44Hello everyone,
I recently installed my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets and am now looking for the best way to clean them sustainably and gently. I am especially interested in which cleaning products are suitable without damaging the surface or finish, and whether different methods are recommended for the various materials (foil fronts, glass fronts, possibly real wood fronts).
It would also be helpful to know if there are specific cleaning techniques that effectively remove stains or grease without leaving streaks.
Does anyone have experience with the best way to clean typical kitchen dirt such as grease, water spots, or fingerprints from the cabinets without damaging the surface or needing frequent re-cleaning?
Thanks in advance for your tips and recommendations!

Hello Lemeo44,
I completely understand being cautious with the new Metod cabinet fronts, as some of them can be quite sensitive and glossy. I also recently set up my kitchen a few months ago and was initially unsure about the best cleaning methods.
In my experience, a soft microfiber cloth with lukewarm water and a drop of mild dish soap usually works well. I’ve noticed that harsh or strong cleaners can dull the surface over time or even cause micro-scratches. This was especially noticeable on matte foil fronts.
I find it interesting that you’re asking about different materials – do you have various types of fronts? I only have the foil fronts myself, but with glass fronts, I would probably be more careful, using special glass cleaners and applying very gentle pressure.
If you already have specific stains, you might try a soft cloth with vinegar diluted 50/50 with water – that has worked well for grease removal in my experience. But as I said, it’s best not to rub too often or too hard.
What has bothered me often is the risk of streaks – sometimes it’s better to wring the cloth well and clean with it flat, not too wet.
If anyone else has experience or tips on how exactly and with which products you clean your Metod cabinets, especially with different front types, I’d be very interested to hear!

Hello Lemeo44,
to answer your question more thoroughly, I first need to address the material properties of the different types of fronts, as their cleaning behavior and sensitivity vary greatly.
- Foil fronts (usually melamine coatings): These are resistant to moisture but quite susceptible to scratches from aggressive or abrasive cleaners. A slightly damp microfiber cloth with mild soapy water is suitable here. Avoid using cleaners containing ammonia or acids, as they can damage the surface. For more stubborn stains, you can treat them with a little dish soap and then wipe thoroughly to avoid residue.
- Glass fronts: The easiest to clean due to their less sensitive material. Glass cleaner or mixtures of water and vinegar work well and leave minimal streaks. It is important not to use abrasive sponges to prevent scratches.
- Real wood fronts (rare with Metod, but if present): The most delicate when cleaning. You should only use special wood impregnation cleaners or a damp cloth with heavily diluted soapy water. Afterwards, you may want to treat the surface with furniture oil or wax to protect it.
I’d like to ask: What do your fronts look like exactly? Do you have matte or glossy foils or glass? Perhaps I can give you more specific advice then.
Regarding streak prevention: Always polish with a clean, dry microfiber cloth and never work directly with overly wet cloths. Room temperature and humidity also play a role; streaks can especially occur when drying happens too quickly.

Hello,
I am happy to provide a structured response regarding the cleaning of your Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets based on the material and the level of dirt:
1. Preparation:
- First, dust the cabinets with a dry microfiber cloth.
- For dust and light dirt, dry wiping is often sufficient.
2. Cleaning for normal dirt (fingerprints, grease stains):
- Slightly dampen a microfiber cloth with lukewarm water and add a mild dish detergent.
- Gently wipe the surface, avoiding harsh movements.
3. Stubborn stains (dried-on grease, water spots):
- Here, a mixture of vinegar essence and water (1:3) can be used.
- Always test first in an inconspicuous area.
- Clean with a soft cloth and immediately wipe again with clear water.
4. Special notes for different fronts:
- Foil fronts: avoid alcohol-based or abrasive cleaners as they can damage the foil.
- Glass fronts: glass cleaner is suitable, but never use abrasive sponges.
- Solid wood: use a special wood cleaner, followed by wood care oil.
Summary: Use mild cleaners, avoid abrasive agents, use microfiber cloths, rinse with clear water, and polish with a dry, soft cloth for a streak-free surface.
A common mistake is using too much water during cleaning, which can cause the edges to swell — always wipe with a barely damp cloth.

I want to ask you: What exactly do your cabinet fronts look like? Do you have matte or glossy laminate or glass? Maybe then I can help you more specifically.Thank you very much for the detailed explanations and specific questions! My fronts are mostly matte laminate, with occasional glass fronts on the wall cabinets.
Are there any special precautions for matte laminate when using vinegar water? I’m wondering if frequent use of vinegar might alter the matte appearance.
Also, do you have any tips on how to best remove fingerprints from matte surfaces without making the surface glossy or causing streaks?
One more thing: On some cabinet edges, I have slight dark deposits (probably grease) that don’t come off completely with regular dish soap and water. What would you recommend to clean these without damaging anything?
