Hello everyone,

I have installed matte cabinet fronts from IKEA METOD in my kitchen and I’m unsure about the best way to clean them without damaging the matte finish or leaving streaks. I usually just use water and a microfiber cloth, but sometimes a film remains or the surface no longer looks completely matte.

Could you please share which cleaning products are particularly suitable, whether special cloths work better, or if there are other important considerations I should keep in mind?

My main goal is to preserve the original condition of the fronts, so I want to avoid polishing too much or cleaning with excessive moisture. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

For matte IKEA METOD fronts, I recommend using plain water and a soft microfiber cloth.

Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the surface. A damp cloth is usually sufficient.

Hello,

I understand your concern, as matte surfaces are more sensitive than glossy ones. IKEA METOD fronts usually have melamine-coated surfaces, which are durable but can be affected by harsh or alcohol-based cleaning agents.

The following method has proven effective:
- First, clean with a slightly damp microfiber cloth and a mild dishwashing detergent solution (a few drops) in lukewarm water.
- Then wipe again with clean water to remove any residue.
- Dry immediately with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

Avoid scouring pads or cloths with a rough texture. If grease stains or fingerprints are stubborn, you can try special cleaners for matte-coated furniture, but always test on an inconspicuous area first.

The most important thing: do not use solvents or harsh chemicals.

Simply use a damp cloth with a little mild dish soap, then wipe again with clean water and dry thoroughly.

This keeps the surface matte and free of scratches.

For cleaning matte IKEA METOD fronts, I recommend the following structured method:

- Use only mild cleaning agents, ideally pH-neutral, to avoid discoloration or shiny spots.
- Use microfiber cloths with a fine fiber structure, as they clean gently and effectively pick up dust and residues.
- Avoid wire or abrasive sponges, as they can cause micro-scratches that visually affect matte surfaces.
- After cleaning, always wipe again with clear water and dry immediately to prevent water spots and streaks, which are particularly noticeable on matte surfaces.

Another tip: If there is grease buildup, a mild dish soap or a specially formulated furniture cleaner for matte lacquered surfaces can be used, but avoid alcohol-based cleaners or solvents.

These recommendations are based on the material data sheets for melamine resin coatings, which IKEA uses to manufacture its METOD fronts.

That’s really great advice – less is often more! 🙂

I clean my matte METOD fronts with a lightly dampened microfiber cloth; sometimes I use a diluted dish soap solution, but always gently and without pressure.

And if something is more stubborn, a little patience and wiping several times without pressing helps. This way, matte fronts stay nicely matte and don’t end up looking polished.

Also, I love that you can remove the morning coffee splash without any panic 😉
