Hello everyone, I recently noticed some stains on my Ikea Hemnes furniture and am unsure how to clean them properly without damaging the wood or the finish. Since the Hemnes series is often made of solid pine wood with a lacquer or oil finish, I would like to know exactly which cleaning products and methods are suitable for effectively removing stains. Is it more a matter of whether the stains are water-soluble, or should special wood cleaners be used? I appreciate your experiences and tips, especially for stubborn stains like red wine or grease. Thanks in advance!

In general, you should handle Ikea Hemnes furniture, which is mostly made of painted pinewood, with care to avoid damaging the surface. For removing stains, I recommend the following procedure:

- First, wipe the surface with a damp, soft cloth—do not use a wet cloth, just slightly moistened.
- For greasy stains, a mild dish soap solution works well; make sure to wring out the cloth thoroughly afterward.
- For more stubborn discolorations, such as red wine, you can gently use a mixture of water and vinegar in a 3:1 ratio, but only test this on an inconspicuous area first.
- Specialized wood cleaners are an option, but ensure they are suitable for painted pinewood.
- Never use aggressive scouring agents or alcohol, as these will damage the protective coating.

Regular maintenance with a soft microfiber cloth is important to preserve the paint finish.

I generally agree with this, but I wonder how durable the Hemnes lacquer really is: Are there specific experiences indicating whether even small amounts of alcohol in cleaning products could be problematic? Some manufacturers of wood cleaners do use alcohol as a solvent. If anyone has long-term experience with this, it would be interesting, since I wonder if this caution might sometimes be exaggerated and certain stains consequently become very hard to remove.

Also, I’m curious how you deal with water stains, which are often invisible until discoloration appears. Are there preventive measures for this? And how often do you clean Hemnes furniture without over-maintaining it?

Hello faso31, I have several years of experience with Hemnes furniture and can tell you that even small amounts of isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol can cause the surface to become dull over time, especially with frequent use. This happens because the finish hardens and becomes brittle. Therefore, I recommend using alcohol-based cleaners very cautiously and only on small areas.

Regarding water stains: they usually form from standing water, so always wipe it off immediately, and regular ventilation helps reduce moisture. For cleaning, I use gentle wood care products that help to replenish oils and protect the surface.

I clean the furniture lightly about every two weeks with a damp, soft cloth and a mild cleaner or wood care oil—this is usually sufficient and avoids unnecessary stress.

I’m looking forward to your experiences and tips, especially for stubborn stains like red wine or grease.

For red wine stains, baking soda paste often helps: mix baking soda with a little water, apply, let it sit briefly, then wipe off with a damp cloth. Don’t leave it on too long, or stain residues may remain in the wood.

For grease stains: use dishwashing detergent diluted in water and then rub dry. Important: never rub or scrub too hard.
