Hello everyone, I am looking for the best way to thoroughly and gently clean the shelves of the IKEA Brimnes shelving unit. The shelves are melamine-coated, so I am wondering which cleaning agents I can safely use without damaging the surface or leaving streaks. I have already tried several products, but either stains remain or the cleaner is too harsh. I am also interested in whether there are special methods for tougher dirt, such as sticky drink residues or dust, that do not reduce the lifespan of the shelves. Does anyone have experience, recommendations, or tips on what to watch out for? Thanks in advance!

Hey Arham! Great that you brought up this topic here! 😊 With my Brimnes shelving unit, I found that a simple microfiber cloth and some warm water often work wonders. It’s important not to apply too much pressure, as the melamine-coated surfaces don’t react well to that! For stubborn stains, I mix a little mild dish soap with water — this works well without damaging the surface!

Definitely avoid using harsh cleaners or abrasive sponges! And always wipe down with a dry cloth afterward to prevent unsightly water spots. You’ve got this, and your shelving unit will thank you! 😉

The following basic guidelines apply for cleaning melamine-coated surfaces, such as those on the IKEA Brimnes shelf:

- Preferably use a soft, lint-free cloth, ideally a microfiber cloth.
- A slightly damp cloth with warm water is sufficient for normal dirt.
- For oily or sticky residues, you may add a mild dish detergent to avoid damaging the surface.
- Avoid abrasive cleaners, bleach, or alcohol, as these can damage the coating and cause peeling.
- After cleaning, the surface should be thoroughly dried with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

For maintaining a well-kept and durable condition, it is also advisable to avoid direct sunlight and excessive moisture, as these can affect the coating over time.

I recommend cleaning IKEA Brimnes shelves with a microfiber cloth and warm water. For stains, add a small amount of mild dish soap. Avoid wiping with too much water, then dry thoroughly. Do not use harsh cleaners.

This is a common issue with melamine-coated surfaces. If stains don’t come off, you can also use vinegar water (one part vinegar, three parts water), but only sparingly and make sure to wipe it off well afterwards.

I can confirm that. It’s important to use the dish soap very sparingly and to dry the surfaces immediately. Avoid abrasive sponges or alcohol at all costs!

One additional recommendation: If you want to be safe, test the cleaner on an inconspicuous spot first. This protects the material and gives you more confidence.
