Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Besta system and I’m wondering how to clean the surface in the best way without damaging it or affecting the finish.
The surfaces on my model are slightly glossy and made of plastic, not solid wood or metal. I want to remove stains, dust, and fingerprints without using harsh cleaners or abrasive materials that could make the surface dull or cracked.
Are there any specific cleaning techniques or special products you would recommend? Should I avoid anything altogether (vinegar, alcohol, etc.)?
I look forward to your experiences and tips to keep my BESTA looking great for a long time!

Abrasive cleaners, solvents like acetone, alcohol, or vinegar can damage the surface and should be avoided. Exactly. So don’t use anything from that list. The classic method: a damp cloth and mild soap.
I wonder if many recommendations are actually too cautious. Of course, you want to protect the furniture, but the surface of Besta is fairly durable. In my experience, using an all-purpose cleaner (citrus- or surfactant-based) that isn’t too harsh can achieve good results and thorough cleaning, even against greasy fingerprints.
Of course, don’t scrub aggressively or use rough sponges. But I think the argument for "only mild soap" is somewhat exaggerated. What are your experiences?
Personally, I believe that fear of minimal surface damage is irrelevant for most households. A matte finish or light micro-scratches are hardly noticeable in a normal environment.

BESTA panels are indeed resistant to scratches and moisture, but aggressive chemicals can damage the protective layer.
Occasional, careful use of a mild all-purpose cleaner with a neutral pH is acceptable, provided it does not contain strong solvents or alcohol.
However, regular use should be approached with caution to prevent long-term material deterioration.
Your observation regarding "minor micro-scratches" is correct. These are often barely visible, but those who want to maintain the optimal original appearance for a long time should use gentle cleaning methods.
