Hello everyone,

I am currently looking more closely into the question: How can I best maintain IKEA PLATSA furniture in daily use to preserve its stability, appearance, and functionality for as long as possible? The PLATSA range, as we all know, mainly consists of a combination of particleboard with melamine coatings and metal as well as plastic components for hinges and handles. Everyday use often leads to minor dirt, scratches, or small moisture marks.

I am especially interested in:
- Which cleaning products are truly suitable without damaging the surface?
- Are there specific care tips to protect the material (especially the particleboard) from swelling caused by moisture?
- How do you handle scratch protection, particularly for the fronts?
- Which methods for maintaining the mechanical parts (hinges, drawer slides) have proven effective?

I would appreciate well-founded experiences, specific products, and practical advice—so I can maintain my PLATSA furniture sustainably and with minimal effort. Thanks in advance!

Hello Fifuto,

regarding your question about the ideal everyday care for IKEA PLATSA furniture, I’m happy to provide a structured overview covering both cleaning and maintenance.

1. Cleaning:
- Use a soft, damp cloth with mild dish soap for the melamine resin-coated surfaces. Avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive products to prevent damage to the surface.
- For stubborn stains, a small amount of vinegar water is often sufficient, but use sparingly and only on specific spots.

2. Protection from moisture:
- Particleboard swells when exposed to water for extended periods, so always wipe off any moisture immediately.
- Use coasters under drinks and even plants to prevent water buildup.
- Avoid water running into joints at the edges; if needed, thin silicone seals can be carefully applied.

3. Scratch protection:
- Since PLATSA fronts are usually melamine-coated and fairly durable, simple solutions like felt pads on sharp edges or contact surfaces work well.
- Use gentle microfiber cloths instead of abrasive sponges.

4. Mechanical parts:
- Regularly dust hinges and drawer slides with a dry cloth.
- Occasionally apply a small amount of silicone spray or special hinge oil to ensure smooth operation; avoid WD-40-type products that can cause buildup.

Summary: Routine cleaning with mild detergent, immediate drying of water, gentle treatment of surfaces, and occasional lubrication of mechanical parts help keep your PLATSA furniture intact and looking good for a long time.

I hope this helps you!

This is a very sensible overview, but I would advise caution when using silicone spray. Some silicone sprays can leave residues that attract dust and may be counterproductive in the long run. Therefore, I recommend choosing a product with as neutral ingredients as possible and testing it on an inconspicuous spot before application.

Also, keep in mind that while the panel edges of PLATSA are melamine-coated, the glue joints are sensitive to moisture—so frequent cleaning with a damp cloth, even with quick drying, can cause damage over time.

A tip: for extra safety, you can use furniture care products specifically designed for coated particleboard. These provide additional surface protection and have formulas that do not harm the adhesive or coating.

I’m also curious if anyone has experience with gentle polishing agents to refresh the appearance of the fronts, especially on matte surfaces?

Exactly, the right care really makes a difference! I have quite simple PLATSA furniture at home and now swear by a mild furniture care spray that was specially designed for melamine-coated furniture.

A few small tips from my experience:
- Avoid using paper napkins for cleaning – they can cause tiny scratches.
- Instead, use a microfiber cloth with a mild cleaner.
- For everyday maintenance, dry dusting is usually enough.
- For drawers, it helps to occasionally polish the rails with a bit of wax rather than oil – it attracts less dirt.

A little side note: My cat also seems to have figured out that sharp claws on PLATSA edges aren’t ideal 😉 So it also helps to protect furniture in places where pets often visit.

In the end, the key is to care for your furniture regularly rather than waiting too long and then having to use harsher products. This way, appearance and functionality stay like new for longer.
