Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble several IKEA Hemnes furniture pieces in a very small apartment and am looking for the best strategies to make the most of the limited space. My main questions are: How can I arrange the Hemnes series to save space without sacrificing storage or functionality? Are there recommended combinations or ways to modify or position individual pieces so they don’t feel overwhelming in a small room? I am also interested in any practical tips for assembly that take room space into account, such as adjusting installation or special assembly methods. I would appreciate experiences with small rooms where Hemnes has worked well, as well as advice on what to watch out for when purchasing or assembling. Thanks in advance!

Hello Aronbu, your question is very precise and exactly what many people with small apartments and Hemnes furniture are concerned about. Basically, the goal in small spaces is to maximize the use of vertical space and choose furniture with multiple functions. The Hemnes series is a good choice because it offers rather slim yet very sturdy pieces. I would recommend placing tall cabinets or display cases next to low dressers to avoid creating a kind of furniture "curtain" that visually divides the room. Also, make sure that the furniture is not placed too close to doors or windows to maintain easy movement. A helpful tip is to use shelving with adjustable shelves to keep it flexible. Hemnes furniture can usually be assembled in parts, meaning you can build a tall shelving unit on the floor first and then set it upright, which makes assembly in tight spaces easier. If you want more details, just ask.

That’s a very good point! Especially in small rooms, slim profiles and clean lines are essential so the furniture doesn’t feel too bulky. I personally placed Hemnes dressers side by side so that I could effectively use them as a room divider without overwhelming the space.

Additionally, keeping surfaces light helps, which is often the case with Hemnes. My strategy was also to avoid tall and bulky furniture whenever possible, instead combining several smaller pieces that can be moved around flexibly. By the way, for wardrobes, IKEA often offers additional drawer inserts to better organize the storage space.

Regarding assembly: I recommend always starting with a good sketch of how the furniture will fit together. Before building, sort all parts in advance so you have everything readily available during the assembly process.

If you have limited space, it is best to build tall, slim furniture like the Hemnes display cabinet. Use the upper shelves for items that are rarely used. You can also fix the dressers to the wall to increase stability and prevent accidents.

Hey Aronbu, I can only say: Hemnes is great for small apartments! I had a really tight corner myself, where I placed the small cabinet between the door and window – it looks fantastic and makes perfect use of the space! Just be careful not to put the furniture too close together – leave some space so the room doesn’t feel cramped. And another tip: use light colors in the room, as this makes everything feel much bigger and more open. And of course, be patient and study the assembly instructions before starting – that’s half the battle :-)

For additional information: The Hemnes series is made of solid wood, which means the furniture is more durable but also somewhat heavier than some other IKEA lines. In small rooms, this can be a disadvantage because moving the pieces around regularly can become tedious. Therefore, I recommend planning the assembly so that the furniture stays in its final position. If modifications are necessary, it might be possible to partially assemble some parts beforehand to make transportation easier.

Regarding storage space: It is worthwhile to use extra organizers in the drawers and compartments (e.g., small boxes or dividers) to maximize the available space. The back panel of the Hemnes cabinet can also be enhanced with hooks or magnetic strips to create additional small storage areas.
