I have Malm furniture from Ikea and I really want to avoid scratches, dents, or other damages. I am especially interested in practical tips and recommendations that help keep the surface of this furniture looking nice for as long as possible. What protective measures related to use, cleaning, and possibly care products have you found effective? Are there specific materials or methods that minimize the risk of damage, especially if you have children or pets in the household? I appreciate any help!

Hello yasminsan,
I completely understand your concern. Malm furniture looks nice but unfortunately isn’t very resistant to scratches or moisture.
To avoid damage, I mainly recommend gentle cleaning methods: use a soft microfiber cloth and lukewarm water, never harsh cleaners or abrasives that could damage the surface. Direct sunlight can also fade or make the material brittle, so try not to keep the furniture in constant sunlight near windows.
For scratch protection, felt pads under the furniture legs and coasters under decorations or lamps can be helpful. If you have children, being mindful is important as well: no sharp toys on the furniture, and maybe consider small covers or placemats.
With pets, it can help to discourage them from jumping on the furniture. Care products specially made for lacquered wood are more likely to cause wear, so I would generally avoid those.
Best regards and I hope this helps!

gentle cleaning methods That’s brilliant, it’s often underestimated how important that is!I also believe that a bit of caution can work wonders. I always use felt pads under items, and my surfaces have held up really well because of it. 🙂
Additionally, I use placemats, especially when placing something heavy or abrasive. This way, I stay relaxed and my Malm dresser still looks like new!
Don’t worry, with a little effort you can really make a big difference. Good luck!
In summary, the following points are important to avoid damage to Malm furniture:
1. Cleaning agents: Use only mild, pH-neutral cleaners. Strongly alkaline or acidic agents can cause permanent damage to the painted surface.
2. Mechanical protection: Felt pads under furniture and objects effectively reduce the risk of scratches. Hard or sharp items should also not be placed directly on the surface.
3. Avoid direct sunlight: UV radiation can cause not only color fading but also micro-cracks in the surface.
4. Moisture protection: Avoid letting water remain on the surface for extended periods, as this can lead to swelling and deformation.
5. Handling with pets and children: Conscious prevention measures, such as furniture covers or barriers, provide additional protection.
These points are based on manufacturer guidelines and experience in furniture care. Regular, gentle cleaning is essential for the longevity of the Malm series.
