Hello everyone,

I am currently preparing to install my new IKEA Platsa wardrobe system and have a specific question about mounting the back panel.

Could you please explain in detail how to properly attach the back panel so that it is stable but does not negatively affect the overall appearance? The manual briefly covers this, but I am unsure about the best way to secure the back panel—especially whether special screws, nails, or clips are needed, and if there are particular techniques for aligning it.

Additionally, I would like to know if it is better to install the entire back panel at once or to divide it into sections. How do you handle this with larger units to prevent the back panel from shifting or warping?

I look forward to detailed, practical advice, and I would appreciate hearing about your personal experiences.

Hello,

for the back panel of the PLATSA wardrobe system, small nails or the supplied screws are used, depending on the material of the back panel provided.

First, assemble the entire wardrobe, then align it properly and attach the back panel.

Usually, the back panel is installed all at once. It is important that the wardrobe stands straight to prevent the back panel from warping.

Hello Hannesbi,

your question is very well formulated and important because the back panel affects not only the appearance but also the stability of your PLATSA cabinet.

Basically: the back panel usually consists of a thin wood or fiberboard material, which is typically fixed with small nails. You should make sure that the cabinet is fully assembled and aligned, meaning it is plumb and square.

If you attach the back panel to the entire carcass, you prevent the cabinet from wobbling or twisting later on. Sometimes, with larger units, it makes sense to install the back panel in sections—such as when connecting multiple cabinet modules.

Make sure to cut the back panel to size before nailing it in; it should fit precisely on the bottom and sides to avoid any gaps.

The special nails are often included in the set; if not, small fine nails from a hardware store will work as well, using a rubber or plastic mallet to prevent the wood from splitting.

Also, it is advisable to install it in several steps: fix the back panel at the bottom edge first, then along the sides, and finally at the top—this way you can control and adjust the position easily.

I hope this helps! Feel free to ask if you want more detailed advice on how to use specific tools effectively.

Thanks to nonpra and TEOZAR for the initial helpful replies!

I also found that important, but are there specific tips for aligning the back panel when placing the cabinet on uneven floors? It seems risky to fully attach the back panel immediately if the carcass might still be slightly tilted.

It’s important that the cabinet stands level so the back panel doesn’t warp.

How would you compensate for this – with shims? Or partially attach the back panel first, then adjust the cabinet?

Thanks again!

For precise installation of the back panel in IKEA PLATSA, there are some basic points that significantly improve the result:

- Before fastening: Make sure your cabinet carcass is plumb and level. If the floor is uneven, use small shims or adjustable furniture glides to compensate.
- The back panel should be installed without any tension or pressure. Misalignments can cause warping and an unstable structure.
- If your back panel consists of multiple parts, you can also assemble it step by step, starting at the bottom, then the sides, and finally the top.
- Fastening is usually done with small nails included in the IKEA set. Use a rubber mallet to avoid damage.
- When using screws, no excessive force is needed; just ensure they are not countersunk too deeply to prevent splitting.

Following this approach will help you avoid common back panel installation issues and result in a stable, aesthetically pleasing structure.

Hello! I consider my PLATSA almost like a small DIY artwork, because the back panel is basically the final chord – the last loving touch 🎨.

For assembly: It’s best to start with a good cup of coffee and a positive attitude!

Very important, as andre3 already said, is the alignment. If the floor is uneven, we won’t have the perfect foundation for a clean back panel. You can definitely cheat a little with small wedges or furniture gliders.

I think it’s worth roughly aligning first and then nailing the back panel bit by bit. Each nail adds a little stability to the structure and still allows you to make adjustments. This way you avoid creaking and squeaking surprises later on.

And remember: The back panel is thin – nail it gently to avoid splitting! So, use light taps with a rubber mallet.

Good luck, it will turn out great!
