Hello everyone,
I am planning to mount some sizable and heavy Malm furniture from IKEA on a drywall (plasterboard) wall. Since the furniture is quite large and heavy, I want to be sure how to securely and permanently attach it to drywall panels without damaging either the wall or the furniture. Specifically, I am interested in which anchors or fastening methods are recommended, whether any special precautions are necessary, and if additional reinforcements might be required. I would greatly appreciate practical advice based on experience as well as recommendations for suitable products!

Is there a simple method or special tool for this? Or can I still rely on molly bolts even if the studs might not be exactly aligned?Exactly, feeling with simple means is inaccurate. A metal and live wire detector is the best tool for this.
Be aware that if there is no substructure behind the drywall, molly bolts are a very solid choice, especially high-quality ones with a metal expansion mechanism. They hold excellently even with 12.5 mm (½ inch) wall thickness and are rated for up to 50 kg (110 lbs) per anchor, which provides sufficient margin to support your 60 kg (132 lbs) Malm furniture when using four or more anchors.
A tip: Measure the mounting points on the wall before installation and then check if there are studs behind them. If no studs are present at these points, avoid heavy point loads—for example, by stabilizing the furniture with an additional floor support.
One more question: How high are the furniture pieces mounted? If very high, the load on the anchors increases, which makes a stronger attachment or additional reinforcements like wall profiles advisable.
The safest method is to screw into the metal studs. Their spacing is usually 60 cm (24 inches), please verify.
If this is not possible, use metal toggle anchors and distribute the load across at least four anchors.
The drywall panels must be intact and free of damage to safely support loads.

The safest method is to use screws into the metal studs.Absolutely, when you hit the studs, that holds best!
It’s also important to choose screws that are neither too short nor too long, otherwise you might damage the drywall unnecessarily.
Good luck with your project, it will turn out great! 🙂
