Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install several IKEA Platsa units in my apartment, but the walls are made of drywall (gypsum board). My specific question is: How can I securely attach Platsa furniture to drywall walls so that they can safely support the weight without falling down?

I have already found some anchors and screws designed for drywall, but I am not sure which methods and fasteners are ideal for the Platsa series, especially given the partly modular construction of the furniture.

Has anyone had experience with which anchors (for example, hollow wall anchors or metal anchors) are suitable, how to best distribute the load, or if any additional measures are recommended?

I would appreciate tips on the right combination of anchors, screws, and possibly reinforcements.

Thank you in advance!

Definitely use metal anchors (cavity anchors) for drywall. Distribute the load across multiple anchors, at least four per piece of furniture. Screw into the anchors as deep as possible. If possible, drill and screw into drywall studs (metal studs).

Hello pirapar,

Your concern is very important because drywall partitions are not always as load-bearing as solid walls. IKEA PLATSA furniture can be quite heavy—especially when filled with items.

I would recommend the following:
- Use hollow metal anchors specifically designed for drywall, which expand behind the board; these hold much better than simple plastic anchors.
- Pay attention to the load capacity of each anchor and calculate how many you need in total (more anchors help to distribute the load better).
- If possible, try to fasten the screws into the underlying metal studs of the framing. This is the safest option.
- To minimize stress on the drywall, install a wood or metal cleat as a support between the wall and the furniture, which you then securely attach to the wall. This allows you to use heavier-duty screws for the furniture.
- Also consider the height of the furniture—the higher it is, the more securely it should be fastened to reduce the risk of tipping.

I hope this helps! If you like, I can explain in more detail how to install the wooden cleat.

Good luck with the assembly!

Hello pirapar,

I’m glad to see you are carefully considering the mounting of your PLATSA furniture on drywall – this is really important to avoid damage.

Always use metal anchors (hollow wall anchors) for drywall.

That is definitely correct; metal anchors are usually stronger than simple plastic plugs. Additionally, I would like to add the following:

- First, check if you can locate the supporting structure (the metal or wooden studs behind the drywall). A basic stud finder with a metal detection function can help with this.
- If you can screw directly into the studs, that is always the best attachment method, as this is where the actual load-bearing capacity is.
- If that is not possible, use hollow wall anchors with a high load rating, such as toggle bolt anchors or spring toggle anchors.
- Distribute the load over as many anchors as possible because each anchor can only carry a limited load.
- Due to the weight of fully loaded PLATSA furniture, securing it against tipping is highly recommended. Use safety brackets or anti-tip devices fixed to the wall if these are not already included in the delivery.

This method is also very practical, especially if you want to mount the furniture higher or if the wall cannot be screwed into the studs.

I hope these tips help you further. If you need support during installation, feel free to provide all the details about your wall and the furniture.

Best regards!
