Hello everyone! I am planning to mount Ikea Platsa furniture on a drywall or plasterboard wall and am looking for a reliable and secure method to do so. The wall is made of gypsum board panels, which usually are not very load-bearing, and I want to avoid any damage to the wall or the furniture falling down later. What options are there for safely installing PLATSA shelves or cabinets? Are there special anchors or techniques that have proven effective? I am especially interested in tips for preparation work, suitable fasteners, and advice on load distribution. Thank you in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

Use a so-called "stud finder" or "metal and wood detector," which reliably locates small metal studs or wood behind the drywall.

Thanks for the tip! Are there any alternative fastening methods without drilling or screws that are truly load-bearing? I’ve heard of adhesive systems or special mounting rails. Could these be an option if I want to avoid damaging the wall? How reliable are these methods in terms of actual load capacity?

Kasekar, as a general rule for drywall partitions, mechanical fastening is always the most reliable method, especially for furniture like wardrobes that can carry considerable weight.

Adhesive systems or mounting rails without screws are more suitable for lighter items and carry a high risk of the furniture sliding over time, particularly with loaded shelves.

If drilling is truly not an option, you might consider so-called "clamping systems" for lightweight furniture, but these offer little long-term security.

My advice: if possible, drill and screw—preferably into the studs, as mentioned earlier. This is the most durable and secure method.

I understand not wanting to damage the wall, but if you want a stable piece of furniture, secure mounting is really crucial. I had similar concerns and initially tried to just lean my PLATSA wardrobe units against the wall and fix them with adhesive systems. After a short time, I realized the risk of tipping over was simply too high, especially with children in the home. Your safety and that of the furniture come first. So my advice: invest in a good stud finder and screw properly. It really gives peace of mind.

Heavy-duty anchors, especially so-called "Molly anchors," are extremely helpful with drywall.

I have a more nuanced view: Molly anchors are not automatically the best solution for every drywall when installing Ikea furniture. Their load capacity depends on wall thickness, material, and weight. Moreover, excessive load can cause the anchor to pull out.

Mechanical fastening is the safest option, especially for furniture like PLATSA, which can be quite heavy.

I agree with this. However, the condition of the wall should also be checked. Not every drywall is the same; some are double-layered or reinforced, while others are more fragile constructions.

My suggestion: check the wall structure before buying anchors and choose fasteners sized according to the weight of the furniture. This prevents incorrect installations and ensures safety.
