Hello everyone,

I am planning to install an Ikea Pax wardrobe system in my bedroom. However, the wall where I want to mount the wardrobe is made of drywall (gypsum board) and is non-load-bearing, which generally concerns me.

My specific question is: How can I securely and permanently attach the Ikea Pax wardrobe to a drywall wall so that it stands stable and the wall does not get damaged? Are there special anchors or mounting materials that have proven to work well in this situation? I want to avoid cracks caused by the weight or the wardrobe tipping over at some point.

It is also important to me whether I should additionally fix the wardrobe to the ceiling or floor, or if mounting it only to the wall is sufficient.

If you have any special recommendations specifically for drywall walls in this case, I would appreciate a detailed response. Many thanks in advance!

For gypsum board walls, I recommend heavy-duty anchors or hollow wall anchors, such as metal toggle bolts. You can secure the Ikea Pax mounting screws with these. Alternatively, make sure that the anchors are rated for the weight.

An additional attachment to the floor or ceiling is usually not necessary if the wall mounting is proper.

Mounting an Ikea Pax wardrobe on a drywall requires special attention because drywall materials do not support heavy loads at single points well. Here are my recommendations:

- Use specialized metal hollow wall anchors (toggle bolts) that open behind the drywall to better distribute the load.
- Before installation, check if there is a load-bearing structure (wood or metal stud) behind the drywall. Securing directly into these studs is always preferable.
- If no load-bearing studs are available, use multiple toggle bolts to spread the weight over several fixing points.
- Ikea Pax units vary in weight depending on the model; plan for approximately 20–35 kg (44–77 lbs) per module plus contents.
- For additional stability, securing the wardrobe to the floor or ceiling mounting may be advisable, especially for tall or very heavy wardrobe solutions.

In summary: prioritize fastening into load-bearing components behind the drywall and use hollow wall anchors suitable for drywall. Avoid concentrating loads on single, unsuitable points of the drywall.

I can confirm this. To safely transfer the load to the wall, you must strictly follow the recommended minimum number of anchors. Ikea usually provides information on the maximum load capacity of the fixing points along with the connecting screws.

If the wall consists only of drywall (plasterboard) without any load-bearing framework, floor mounting is advisable. This prevents tipping hazards and compensates for the lack of wall stability. In this case, a combination of wall and floor anchoring is the safest solution.

One important aspect not to overlook in your planning is checking the load-bearing capacity of the wall itself. Even the best wall plugs are only as reliable as the material they are anchored into.

A practical approach is to first precisely locate the drywall framework using a stud finder or depth gauge to identify any load-bearing metal studs behind the plasterboard. You can then attach the wardrobe much more securely to these supports.

If this is not an option, specialized cavity anchors with a high load rating are a reasonable alternative.

It is also advisable to have someone assist you during installation, setting up the wardrobe carefully and tightening the screws step by step to minimize stress on individual points in the wall.

In general, I recommend isolating the mounting points by placing felt or rubber strips between the wardrobe and the wall to reduce stress concentrations.
