Hello everyone,
I am planning to assemble an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am currently facing the challenge of attaching the hinges correctly. My question is: How do I properly install Ikea Pax hinges to ensure they are secure and positioned with millimeter precision?
I am especially interested in the steps involved in inserting and adjusting the hinges, whether any specific tools are absolutely necessary, and if there are particular details to watch for during installation to ensure long-lasting durability and smooth closing of the doors.
I want to assemble the wardrobe as durably and neatly as possible, so I would appreciate a detailed explanation, ideally including tips on common mistakes or pitfalls when attaching the Pax hinges. Thank you in advance!

Honestly, who still uses screws with such a clamping mechanism that is so delicate nowadays?I understand that, but especially with affordable furniture like Ikea, I still expect a solid design. The clamping mechanism actually makes sense because it simplifies hanging the door and allows for adjustments without having to disassemble everything again.
Are there any recommendations on how to protect or handle these delicate parts specifically? For example, can the screws be tightened to a certain torque, or would that cause the system to lose its function?
I’m also interested in the balance between strength and flexibility in this type of installation, particularly when the hinges need to be adjusted regularly.

Is it possible, for example, to tighten the screws with a specific torque, or would that cause the system to lose its function?Yes, tightening with controlled torque is indeed important. In my experience, screws should be tightened until they feel firmly secured, not fully tightened with maximum force.
For the clip-on mechanism, the key point is that the hinge remains freely movable, so the mechanism must not be subjected to excessive pressure. If you have a torque wrench, applying about 1.5 to 2 Nm is sufficient for these types of furniture.
Applying too much force can cause the mounting plate to fray or damage the plastic interior of the hinge, which negatively affects durability.

Are there any recommendations on how to protect or treat these sensitive parts?Another tip: Before screwing, check the drill holes to ensure they are cleanly made and that the screws can be inserted easily.
To fix loose hinges, you can fill the drill holes with plastic anchors or wood shavings mixed with wood glue to improve screw grip.
Roughening the contact surfaces also increases holding strength if you have problems tightening screws.
To protect the plastic parts, it is advisable not to use a cordless drill with too high a speed or torque, but rather work carefully and screw in one by one.
The experiences shared here sound very well-informed, thank you for that!
I wanted to add that especially when first attaching the hinges on an Ikea Pax wardrobe, many people feel uncertain because the mechanism is unusual. I also felt a bit uneasy at the beginning because the doors don’t fit perfectly right away.
My advice for anyone just starting out: Be patient, take your time adjusting, and leave the screws a bit loose at first so you can fine-tune them later.
It also helps to keep in mind that the system is designed to be modular: hang the doors, check their alignment, make corrections, and only then fully tighten the screws. This way, you can avoid frustration and ensure a secure installation.
