ᐅ How do I securely attach Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to rough walls?

bano31Hello everyone,
I am currently planning my new kitchen with Ikea Metod, but I have encountered a problem with mounting the base and wall cabinets. My walls are quite rough and uneven – they seem to be older plastered walls that are not completely smooth. Now I am wondering how to securely and permanently attach the Metod kitchen cabinets to such a rough wall, so that the screws hold firmly and the cabinets are mounted level and stable.
Are there specific anchors or methods you would recommend? Do I need to create some kind of leveling surface before installation, for example with battens or a special mounting system? And what length or type of screws are ideal if I am not satisfied with the original IKEA mounting hardware?
I look forward to your tips and experiences on the topic “How to mount Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on rough walls?”
Thanks in advance!

Hello bano31,
I just went through your question again about mounting Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets on rough walls and want to give you as detailed an answer as possible, since I faced a similar situation myself.
First, it’s important to know that Metod wall cabinets hold best with the included wall plugs and screws when the wall is solid. With rough, uneven walls, you may run into problems because the plugs won’t sit flush or the cabinet won’t lie flat.
My recommendation is the following step-by-step approach:
- First, assess how severe the unevenness is. If it’s minor, you can compensate by attaching a sturdy mounting batten (for example, an 18–20 mm (0.7–0.8 inch) thick plywood panel or a wooden construction batten) to the wall. This needs to be anchored “deep” into the wall using suitable wall plugs and long screws to safely carry the load.
- For fixing the batten, choose special heavy-duty wall plugs, such as Fischer SX or UX, depending on the substrate, to make sure the batten is firmly secured and cannot move.
- By attaching this mounting batten, you can then fix the cabinet to the wooden surface—which is smooth and provides an even, stable base.
- Alternatively, if you want to fix the cabinets directly to the wall, chemical anchors are a good option; combined with steel anchors, they provide extremely strong hold, but this method is more complex.
- Make sure the screws are long enough—at least 6 cm (2.4 inches) plus the length of the wall plug—so they don’t just hold in the surface layer.
- To level the cabinet during installation, you can use small spacers or wedges, since the wall is rough.
One question from my side: Do you know if your wall is made from solid brick, concrete, or more of an older plaster with hollow spots? That greatly influences the choice of wall plugs.
I hope this gives you a good starting point! I’m happy to help further if you have more specific details.

Don’t worry, with a bit of preparation it will go really well! For rough walls, I always start by installing a mounting strip first; after that, everything is much easier to level and the cabinet hangs securely!
- Don’t be afraid of rough wall surfaces!
- Use good tools and strong anchors
- It’s better to install a mounting strip first to create a perfect base
The most important thing: always measure and test carefully. You’ve got this!
Good luck with your kitchen project!

This is the best method when the plaster is uneven. No need for major experiments.
