bokotiHello everyone, I’m currently facing the challenge of mounting my new IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on a drywall surface. The wall is stable, but it consists purely of drywall without any visible wooden studs or metal framing at the mounting location. My specific question is: What fastening methods are recommended for drywall to securely and permanently install the Metod cabinets? Ideally, I would also like to know which types of anchors and screws are best suited to ensure the construction can handle a certain load without the cabinets slipping down or damaging the wall. Thanks in advance for all tips and experiences!
Hey bokoti! It’s great that you’re thinking this through! 😊 Drywall can be tricky, but don’t worry: With the right anchors, you’ll manage it perfectly! For IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, I’d recommend heavy-duty anchors – for example, metal anchors that expand behind the board. It’s important not to rely solely on simple plastic anchors, as they don’t support enough weight. If possible, also try to fix the cabinets directly to metal studs or consider adding an extra wooden batten, which you attach to solid points. Then you can securely hang the cabinets on that! You’ve got this!

I once mounted my kitchen cabinets on drywall and swear by what are called hollow wall metal anchors. They expand behind the drywall and hold very securely. Bonus: if they ever loosen, you can remove the anchors without causing much damage.
A quick tip: always use high-quality anchors; cheap ones can cause problems. Also, make sure your screws match the size of the anchors, otherwise everything will slip. Good luck!
For mounting IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets on a drywall (gypsum board) wall without an existing substructure, I recommend the following approach:
- Use heavy-duty toggle anchors (hollow wall anchors) with a high load capacity. These expand behind the drywall and distribute the load.
- Before drilling, check with an endoscope or magnet to see if there are metal studs or a hidden beam structure behind the drywall.
- If a wooden batten or metal stud is accessible, it is preferable to mount the cabinets directly to it.
- Alternatively, you can install a wooden mounting batten across several studs. You then hang your kitchen cabinets on this batten.
It is important to use screws and anchors that are designed for the specific wall thickness and cabinet weight.
Be careful with the drywall to avoid cracks.

If I want to install the mounting batten: What type of wood and dimensions are common, and how wide should the batten be to properly distribute the load? Also, are standard wood screws sufficient for fixing it to the metal studs in the wall, or should I use special screws?
