ᐅ How do I install IKEA Metod cabinet doors for secure attachment and smooth closing?

JeromekoHello everyone,
I recently fitted my kitchen with Ikea Metod cabinets and am now facing the challenge of mounting the doors so that they are both stable and close smoothly. By this, I mean the doors should neither wobble nor fit too loosely after installation, and I want them to close softly and quietly rather than slamming.
I understand that Metod doors have special hinges and that adjusting these hinges is crucial. However, I have read that sometimes additional measures are needed, such as securing the screws better or further adjusting the hinges to ensure a firm hold.
I am interested in:
- How can I best attach the Ikea Metod doors so they are firmly and securely mounted?
- How do I properly adjust the hinges to achieve soft and damped closing?
- Are there any proven tips or tools that go beyond the standard installation?
I look forward to detailed answers from experienced users. Thank you in advance!

Regarding your concern: With Ikea Metod, you should first ensure that the hinges are properly seated in the designated drill holes. The stability mainly depends on tightening the screws correctly, but be careful not to overtighten to avoid damaging the material.
Fine adjustment is also important:
- For secure support: Position the hinges centered on the cabinet body to prevent lateral stress.
- For smooth closing: Most Metod hinges have built-in dampers that can be adjusted slightly for better performance.
Additionally, small rubber buffers on the inside of the door can help soften the closing impact if the damping is insufficient.
It is also recommended to periodically retighten the screws, as they can loosen over time with use.

If the doors become loose after a few weeks, simply tighten the screws again. For smooth closing, silicone or self-adhesive dampers can be installed on the inside.

The stability mainly depends on how tightly the screws are fastened, but be careful not to overtighten and damage the material.I would like to disagree with that. If the screws are not as tight as possible, there is a higher risk that the door will wobble or become misaligned under load. Although Ikea uses particleboard, the screws hold well if tightened with care.
This is about finding a balance between protecting the material and ensuring stability. For me, it only works with the screws tightened as firmly as possible. I also recommend replacing the screws used with higher-quality metal ones to ensure longer-lasting stability.

Use adjustment screws for height, depth, and lateral offsetThat is an important point that is often underestimated. Anyone who only secures roughly and doesn’t adjust precisely will quickly face problems with doors that tilt or close unevenly.

This is about finding the right balance between material protection and structural stability.Exactly. To optimize this, I recommend lightly applying wood glue to the drilled holes before assembly. This improves the grip of the screws in the particle board and increases load capacity.
It is also important to finely adjust the doors after hanging by calibrating the hinges along all three axes (side, height, depth). The Ikea Metod systems provide all necessary adjustment options for this.
For smooth closing, I suggest checking the damper mechanism. Some dampers can be adjusted by gently tightening or loosening the screw on the hinge mechanism, or replaced if defective.
One last tip: recheck the screws after a few weeks, as the material and fittings often settle or shift initially.
