Hello everyone, I recently planned an Ikea Metod kitchen and now I’m wondering about the best way to attach the matching baseboards to the different types of flooring in my apartment. Specifically, I have tiles in the kitchen, laminate in the entrance area, and hardwood flooring in the living room. According to the instructions, the Metod baseboards are mounted with clips that attach to the base cabinets, but I’m unsure if this will hold well on uneven or varying floors. Are there any proven techniques or alternative fastening methods you would recommend to ensure the baseboards are firmly installed, have no gaps, and last over time? It would be great if you could also share tips for preparing the subfloor or suggest suitable materials. Thanks in advance!

How exactly should I best attach this leveling strip to the tiles without it coming loose over time? Do I need to prepare the surface or use a specific type of glue or adhesive?Good questions! For attaching a leveling strip to tiles, a strong construction adhesive or a specialized tile adhesive that provides high bonding strength is particularly suitable.
The procedure:
- Thoroughly clean the tiles with alcohol or a degreasing cleaner to remove any dirt, grease, or residues.
- Lightly sand the tile surface with fine sandpaper to create a better bonding area.
- Carefully remove the sanding dust as well.
- Use a high-quality construction adhesive suitable for smooth surfaces, such as an MS polymer adhesive. Make sure it remains flexible, since tiles and wood expand differently.
- Apply the adhesive evenly to the back of the strip and position it precisely.
- If necessary, secure the strip with tape or clamps during the curing time.
Regarding thickness: the strip should be as thin as possible, ideally 5–8 mm (0.2–0.3 inches), so the skirting board clips are not overstressed. It is also important that the cabinets can still properly snap into the clips without any tension on the attachment.
If you need further details about the clip construction, I can gladly explain datasheets or similar information.

For laminate and hardwood flooring, I recommend not screwing or gluing the baseboards directly to the floor, as the material can expand and contract.I fully agree with that. In my opinion, the Ikea clip fastening system is the best solution for this. If there are uneven gaps between the cabinet base and the baseboard, using foam-like spacers behind the clips can sometimes help. This prevents excessive stress on the clips and protects the floor. It is also important to regularly check the fastenings, especially with older floors that may shift over time.
If you use different fixing methods for tiles and laminate, you can adapt the installation flexibly depending on the room. When in doubt, it’s better to use a clip system and apply small leveling strips with construction adhesive at floor transitions. I did it this way, and it has held without any problems for years.

Listefan347 Dec 2020 08:45Great, thanks to everyone for the detailed tips! To summarize, my plan is:
- Precisely align and adjust the base cabinets
- Prefer clip fasteners for the Metod kickboards
- For larger floor height differences (tiles to laminate), glue a thin leveling strip of 5-8 mm (0.2-0.3 inches) onto the tiles, using a high-quality assembly adhesive on properly prepared tiles
- Do not glue laminate or parquet directly to the floor; clip holders are sufficient there
If I have any further questions, I will gladly reach out again. Many thanks especially to PLOMA and Jeanbar for the expert advice! It’s very helpful for my preparation.
