Hello everyone,

I am facing the challenge of installing the baseboards from the IKEA Metod kitchen system on a floor that is not level. The individual floor panels are laid somewhat unevenly, so the baseboards don’t sit flush everywhere, resulting in gaps or tension.

I am especially interested in which fastening methods work best in this situation and how to best compensate for unevenness without causing future problems with stability or appearance.

Does anyone have proven techniques or tips? I was thinking, for example, about flexible mounting rails or additional underlays, but I’m unsure if that is a good idea.

Thanks in advance for your experiences and recommendations!

Hey! That definitely sounds like a classic "baseboard challenge." 😊 What often helps with uneven floors is a combination of flexible fastening solutions and small adjustments.

- First, I would check if you can shim the baseboards with small wooden or plastic wedges to fill the gaps.
- Self-adhesive mounting tracks or clips that can be slightly bent also work well – this way, you can adjust the boards to the floor.

Sometimes it’s enough to install the baseboards a bit more loosely so they don’t press tightly against the floor and can adapt to the unevenness instead of hiding it.

Good luck with your project! 😎

Hello!

To systematically address the issue of baseboards and uneven floors, I recommend the following approach:

- First, carefully measure and document the unevenness (e.g., using a spirit level or a long straightedge). It is important to note how significant the height differences are and whether they occur at specific spots or over a larger area.

- For minor unevenness, flexible mounting strips designed to accommodate floor irregularities can be used. In this case, it is advisable not to fasten the strips rigidly as with typical baseboards, but to attach them so they allow some movement.

- For more complex floor unevenness, it can be helpful to level the floor slightly in the baseboard area using a leveling compound (e.g., filler or thin MDF strips as an underlay).

- Additionally, I recommend possibly trimming the Metod baseboards at the corners or finishing them with small molds to avoid fixing problems caused by tension.

- Note: The original IKEA clips are usually rigid, which can be problematic on uneven floors. Here, custom-made adjustable holders or using screws with spacers might be more effective.

One more question: How pronounced are the unevenness? Are we dealing with differences in the millimeter range or several centimeters (inches)? This makes a big difference in the choice of technique.

Best regards!

This gives me a funny idea: instead of traditional MDF, you could even try thick carpet padding or foam rubber. It might not look perfect, but as a temporary solution before the final installation, it’s a nice flexible option! 😉

Also, regarding the clips: the original ones often work great on flat floors—that’s Swedish precision for you 😉

For really uneven surfaces, I recommend mounting the baseboard so it “floats” slightly and hiding small gaps with decorative trim or even a dark silicone joint. This has worked well for me several times when there wasn’t enough time for extensive floor leveling.

In short: sometimes a clever trick is worth more than the perfect setup.
