Good morning everyone,

I am facing the challenge of securely mounting several BILLY shelves onto a drywall (gypsum board) wall. These shelves are not only meant to fill a wall decoratively but also to hold some heavy books and items. My question is quite specific: which fasteners and methods are best suited to ensure the BILLY shelf stays stable without damaging the drywall or losing stability over time?

I have done some research and encountered metal anchors, cavity anchors, and heavy-duty anchors, but the terminology and compatibility with the BILLY system are not entirely clear to me. I would appreciate tips on choosing the right anchors, pre-drilling, or alternative fixing methods. Experience reports and advice on any special considerations when mounting on drywall are also welcome.

Thank you in advance!

Hello marquardtr,

this is really an important and often underestimated question, thank you for explaining it so thoroughly! It makes sense to pay attention to stability, especially with drywall panels, where caution is needed. I have personally installed BILLY shelves and found that regular wall plugs are not sufficient when the load gets heavier.

What I would recommend are toggle bolts (also known as hollow wall anchors). They open up behind the panel and distribute the load more effectively. If you use several points with such anchors, you will be on the safe side. An alternative is to fix directly onto the wall studs, if you can locate a wooden or metal stud behind the drywall.

This may sound complicated at first, but if you get the right drill and suitable anchors, it works well. Just take your time and use a stud finder beforehand to locate where the studs run. This way, you even get a mounting point for the shelf that will last longer.

I was a bit nervous before I started, but in the end, I was glad I didn’t just use standard wall plugs. If you like, I can also give you tips on the exact drill sizes or mounting heights—just let me know!

Good luck and don’t get discouraged 🙂

Hello marquardtr,

I’d like to go into a bit more detail on the technical aspects so you know exactly how to proceed.

1. Determining the Wall Structure: First, you should locate the metal or wooden studs behind the drywall using a suitable deep-scanning device or stud finder. Ideally, you mount the BILLY shelves directly to the studs, as this is the most secure method.

2. Fastening Materials: If it’s not possible to hit the studs, use hollow wall anchors (also called toggle bolts) designed specifically for timber frame and drywall construction. Examples of such anchors include models like Fischer UX-K or Toggler Snaptoggle. These anchors open up behind the drywall and spread the load over a larger area inside the cavity.

3. Drill Hole Size and Installation: Strictly follow the drill hole diameter recommended by the anchor manufacturer, which is usually between 8 and 10 mm (0.3 and 0.4 inches). Pre-drilling should be precise and straight so the anchor fits cleanly in place. After setting the anchor, you can mount the BILLY bracket with the appropriate screws.

4. Load Distribution and Spacing: It’s important to use multiple fixing points to distribute the load on the wall. Also, avoid overloading the shelves—stack heavy books carefully or consider additional fixings if needed.

5. Alternative Solutions: If maximum support is required, you can consider fixing a sturdy backing board (e.g., plywood) to the wall first and then attaching the BILLY shelf to that. However, this method is more complex.

If you have more detailed information about the wall structure (stud spacing, drywall thickness), I can provide you with even more precise recommendations.

That really emphasizes the importance of secure mounting. When in doubt, double-check the installation.

Best regards!

Hey everyone!

Great discussion here! I wanted to share a few practical tips from my experience—nice and relaxed, and pragmatic 🛠️😉

When mounting BILLY shelves on drywall (plasterboard), it's best to invest in quality anchors and screws—that really pays off. I recommend using metal wing hollow wall anchors. They spread out nicely behind the wall and hold firmly even under heavier loads.

I can only agree with that. Nothing is more frustrating than a shelf suddenly falling down—that causes chaos and annoys everyone 😉

It's also important to drill calmly and at a steady speed—too much pressure can damage the panel. Additionally, using a Spax wood screw driver bit helps you screw in the screws with better control.

Regarding the mounting height: Think carefully whether you want the shelves to be fixed only at the top of the wall or if you also want to install brackets underneath for better stability. These small details make the wall mounting more robust.

I hope this helps you, marquardtr! 🙂 Good luck with the installation!
