Hello everyone,

I want to set up several IKEA Billy bookcases in my garage, but I need to firmly secure them to the concrete floor to prevent them from sliding or tipping over. My question is: What is the best way to safely and permanently fix Billy bookcases to a concrete garage floor?

I have already considered heavy-duty anchors and construction adhesive, but I am unsure which method is best without damaging the bookcases or the floor. I am also interested in whether there are any special materials or techniques to consider when attaching wooden shelves to concrete to ensure long-term stability.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Thank you for your detailed answers!

Regarding @Davebla’s question: The shelves are meant to stand directly on the floor and be stabilized, as the garage is used frequently and I want to prevent anything from tipping over.

@blapau, what exactly do you mean by rubber strips for decoupling? Are these special materials, or can simple rubber mats be used here?

@Ethan, could you possibly recommend which chemical anchors are particularly suitable in such a case? Are there any brands or product types that have proven reliable in the DIY sector?

Hello, I’d like to briefly explain the decoupling: The purpose of the rubber strips is to create a barrier between the wooden shelf and the damp concrete floor, so that moisture does not directly penetrate the wood.

You can use standard rubber mats or thin rubber pads, which are also available as underlays at hardware stores. It is important that they are not too thick, so the shelves remain stable.

Regarding chemical anchors: products based on epoxy resin or polyester are reliable. A well-known brand is Hilti, but Fischer also offers good DIY products. It is important to ensure dust-free drilling and the correct curing time.

If you attach the shelves to the wall, also pay attention to suitable wall plugs.

Just to add: Fischer chemical anchors are very reliable and easy to work with for most household applications.

Even if you have no experience with chemical anchors, there are kits available with detailed instructions. Always blow out the drill dust thoroughly, as this helps the anchor hold better.

Makes sense to me, thanks! So I will use simple rubber strips.

Good to know, I hadn’t considered that before. Overall, I feel much better prepared now, thank you all for the helpful support! 🙂
