enyaflo3317 Jan 2020 08:37Hello everyone,
I am planning to install a large mirror inside my IKEA PAX wardrobe. I want to avoid damaging the back panel or having the mirror shift or fall when opening or closing the wardrobe. Are there recommended methods or specific mounting materials suitable for installing mirrors inside a PAX?
I am especially interested in how to securely and permanently attach a mirror to the back panel or inner side walls without causing future issues with stability or appearance. I would appreciate tips on choosing the right tools and materials, as well as advice on potential pitfalls.
Does anyone have practical experience with mounting mirrors in the IKEA PAX and could share their approach?

I would definitely recommend strong double-sided mirror adhesive tapes, as they provide good hold and keep things neat. Alternatively, you can use small metal angle brackets. However, drilling into the back panel is usually not ideal; it’s better to use the side panels instead.
Hello,
to securely mount your mirror inside the IKEA PAX wardrobe, I recommend a combination of the following methods:
- First, check the back panel: it is often made of thin MDF or hardboard, which can only bear very light loads. Using only screws or strong nails without reinforcement will damage the back panel.
- Therefore, use a sturdy subframe on the side panels or the inside of the cabinet frame whenever possible. There you can install small brackets or supports that will hold the mirror.
- For attaching the mirror itself, mirror clips or chrome-plated metal brackets that can be screwed in are suitable. When using self-tapping screws, pay attention to the material thickness.
- If drilling is not an option, I recommend high-quality mirror mounting tape with at least 1 mm (0.04 inches) thickness and good adhesion on smooth surfaces.
- Before mounting, it is advisable to clean the surface thoroughly – grease and dust significantly reduce the adhesive strength.
- A common mistake is to fix the mirror only with adhesive without mechanical support, which especially with large, heavy mirrors can lead to dangerous fracture points.
In summary: mechanical brackets for stability + adhesive tape for secondary support or to prevent vibrations. This way you avoid damage to the PAX and ensure the mirror is securely mounted.

As LANICOLE mentioned, it is important to thoroughly clean the back panel and let the adhesive points cure for at least 24 hours before using the cabinet again. For heavier mirrors, you can also secure them with small brackets mounted on the side panel.

I am particularly interested in how to securely and permanently attach a mirror to the back panel or inner side walls without causing future issues with stability or appearance. This is a valid question, as many underestimate the load-bearing capacity of the PAX back panel. The back panel usually consists of a thin MDF board or hardboard, which over time offers little stability against loads. The side carcass parts, on the other hand, are more stable.
A common mistake is to screw directly into the back panel, which can lead to the screws pulling out over time. Therefore, I would recommend attaching the mirror to the solid carcass side walls using special mirror brackets. The load should be evenly distributed.
Appearance is often an issue as well: visible screw brackets can look unattractive. A compromise can be flat angle brackets, selected according to internal dimensions and applied with mirror adhesive behind them.
Additionally, keep in mind that the cabinet may expand or contract due to humidity or temperature changes, causing the mirror to shift. Flexible tape and a multi-point fastening system help to avoid stress.
My tip: A combination of mechanical and adhesive fastening, along with careful pre-planning of the mounting location, ensures a visually pleasing and secure result.
