reidson499 Jun 2017 19:23Hello everyone,
I am about to assemble a Malm wardrobe from Ikea and want to make sure I avoid any assembly mistakes.
How can I assemble Malm furniture without errors? Are there any specific tips or strategies to pay attention to in order to prevent mistakes during the assembly? I particularly want to know how to correctly identify the individual parts, what order makes the most sense, and what common pitfalls to watch out for with this model.
Since the instructions for Ikea products are sometimes not entirely clear, it would be great if you could point out any potential misunderstandings or tricky spots. Thanks in advance!

Hello reidson49,
Your question is very well thought out and shows that you take the potential pitfalls of furniture assembly seriously – that’s already half the battle! 🙂
When assembling Ikea’s Malm furniture, it is especially important to carefully sort the parts. Usually, the screws, wooden pieces, and fittings are numbered or marked with pictograms in the instructions – you should follow this strictly. A common mistake is mixing up screws or tightening them too early, which can make it difficult to properly align some parts later.
I recommend first laying out all the parts on a clean, flat surface and checking them against the instructions. Then proceed step by step, assembling only what’s indicated on the current page.
One more tip: If you encounter minor issues, take a short break. Sometimes small details are overlooked when trying to assemble too quickly.
I hope this helps! If you have any specific questions, feel free to reach out again.

Hello reidson49,
I agree with Josan that pre-sorting the assembly parts is absolutely essential, but I take a much more detailed approach when assembling the Malm to avoid assembly mistakes.
First: Check that all wooden parts are free from transport damage, especially the edges where dowels and mounting brackets will be attached. With Malm, the back panel is often a critical point – it must be installed perfectly square and without any tension, otherwise the furniture will be crooked.
Second: Make sure to carefully check all drill holes for dowels and screws. With Malm, there are often screws of different lengths – a common mistake is using a screw that is too long in a thinner panel, which can lead to cracking.
Third: Allow at least two hours for the assembly with a clear step-by-step plan – it’s not enough to just follow the instructions, but really identify each screw beforehand and, if possible, do test screwing.
I can only confirm that! It also helps to be very precise with the torque when tightening screws. Overtightening too early makes later adjustments nearly impossible.
I hope my detailed tips help you. If you like, I can also share the exact sequence I always follow.

Good morning,
Brief and to the point: Sort all the parts, follow the instructions strictly, screw in only lightly at first, and check the fit before fully tightening.
If the screws don’t fit, double-check that you have the correct part. Install the back wall only at the end, as it often causes jamming otherwise.
That’s basically it.
