bilakarHello everyone, I am planning to get an IKEA Platsa system and am currently facing the challenge of assembling this furniture in the most space-efficient way possible. I am particularly interested in how to use the modular system to make the best use of available spatial capacity – for example, in small apartments or niches. Are there any proven strategies for arranging and installing the modules that you would recommend? How do you combine the different sizes and components to use the space efficiently without making the furniture bulky or cluttered? Looking forward to your tips and experiences, thanks in advance!
For space-saving use of IKEA PLATSA furniture, I recommend first measuring the available space accurately and working with sketches. Thanks to the modular design, the units can be customized both in height and width. The following points apply:
- Check the depth of the modules and choose the narrowest options possible
- Combine open and closed units based on storage needs
- Arrange storage according to frequency of use (less frequently used items on top, easier access at the bottom)
- Use corner modules or niches to make the most of the space
This approach optimizes space utilization and prevents unnecessary use of space.

I personally experienced the problem that my first PLATSA configuration looked nice but was very impractical to use. Since then, I take the time to clearly define all areas of use—for example, where I need frequent access and what is only needed occasionally. This makes organizing and keeping an overview much easier. Sometimes it also helps to place individual modules loosely before assembling them permanently.
Here’s how I see it: PLATSA is like Lego for adults with limited space. It makes use of vertical space, as often a lot of free area is overlooked. My favorite solution was combining a tall shelving unit with two narrow cabinets next to it – it doesn’t look cramped and is extremely functional. And don’t worry about tight clearances; sometimes close spacing is better than wasted space.
